uni in Manhattan

Hi all,

I’ll be visiting midtown Manhattan this week, and I’m debating whether I should bring my wheel. I’ve ridden in cities all across the country, but never in the big one.

Are there any issues with sidewalk riding? Is it better/safer to ride in the street? Does anyone have any reasons why I should not bring my uni?

Thanks,

Bill

Of course you should bring your uni.

There’s quite a nice path on the west side of town by the river, goes from the Battery all the way uptown past Riverside Park. I brought my 29er the last time I went and rode along that and up 5th Ave to the Port Authority.

Generally if it’s a big wheel I’d ride in the street, a 24" I’d probably take the sidewalk in most cases. Traffic really doesn’t move very fast in NYC, so even on a 24" the street may be better in areas with crowded sidewalks or scaffolding.

And you should contact David Stone of the Unatic unicycling club in NYC. They meet at Grant’s Tomb every other Saturday or so. They’re a bunch of cool guys and, if you are in town during a meeting, you will get a chance to try all kinds of different uni’s.

unicycling in the big city is alot of fun and i checked with the subway guys last time i was there he oked it. so have fun I will try to ride my new DX in the city some time this summer while im there:)

It really depends what streets your on, and how agressive you want to be. I used to ride my coker up broadway during rush hour on the sidewalk, but later started taking a more casual approach up greenwich street. Alot of sidewalks it won’t be a problem on, especially the avenues, but there will be places that you want to jump onto the road for a block or two, or even just to get around a small group of people. thats the great thing about the unicycle, you can do either. i’ve only ever had one cop tell me to ride on the street, and i just got on the street and then moved back to the sidwalk a block or two later. it’s easier then arguing.
