Uni Gods

Is there one living person who is generally accepted as the icon of unicycling?
Is it Steve McPeak? I read about him in Jack Wileys book. Is Steve still
performing? And what about Jack Wiley, what does he do now? I’d be curious in
reading about what unicyclists you admire and why.

Re: Uni Gods

In my uni-religion its

John Foss, Dana Schneider and Sem and Teresa Abrams.

Interestingly, my teen age daughter’s uni-religion only includes Dustin
Kelm…

No way. The best Artistic Unicyclist Today probably is Julien Monney. He credits
Jose Roman as his early idol and mentor (from a videotape). Last year, Julien
spent a month with us in Puerto Rico, before UNICON IX. Although Julien still
idolizes Jose, I saw them side by side, and I have no doubt that Julien is past
Jose. Jose is a 4 times World Champ, and came out with many of the skills which
are popular Today, including the standup (WheelWalk, Gliding, Coasting). Jose
first showed them back in 1990, at the NUM at Findlay, Ohio. Both Jose and
Javier Ruiz performed them in their routine for UNICON V in Hull, Canada in
1991. I had a rule here, when I had all the young talent (Jose, Javier, Josue,
Carlos, etc.) that whoever came out with a new skill would show it first in
international competition, then it was public domain. Javier Ruiz is a three
times World Champion (and 5 second places)He came out with a few of the skills
in our RuleBook. We must also remember Sem. Until he had to go out and earn a
living, he was in a class by himself. I know that he performs, but he must
narrow down in a few skills. At that time we had a very talented rider called
Daniel Dumeng. Daniel always credited Sem as the best of the world. But we must
remember that unicycling is not only Artistic. There is racing, there are team
sports, there is MUNI, etc. Then, there is the off the uni contributions.

Taken all in consideration, in my opinion, our icon must be John Foss, the only
double digit World Champion.

Comparing Steve to any of the aforementioned is like comparing a GlobeTrotter to
Michael Jordan. Maybe they are good, but not in the same league.

Your God’s are out of date or you’re following the wrong religion  There are
other Gods and I’ll mention just a few: John Foss, Yuichiro Kato, Jose Roman,
Dana Schneider, Dustin Kelm, Julien Money… The last one is probably the most
skilled unicyclist on the planet today.

He is the male world champion, for starters. But he is above and beyond “merely”
being a world champion. He is so smooth, so good, so devoted, so natural –
totally amazing, and he certainly deserves to be called a “Uni God”

Many people have videos of Unicon IX and Unicon VIII.

I would totally agree that he is amazing - stand-up coasting is a basic
skill for him!

Ahhhhhhhh

Re: Uni “Gods”

If you think about all impossible skills, even Julien says “its possible”- or he
is just training o practicing the figur… What a shame, if most of the
unicyclists imitate one person. He sets new frontiers, but for everyone:
Innovate, dont imitate! (I wish I could follow these words.)
