At my school there is an option to do circus skills for sport, which is where i learnt first to ride a uni a year ago. this also means that there are others in my school who have learnt to ride very well, which is fantastic.
Now, one year later (all of us much more skilled) we got the bright idea to hijack the school quad and play some good ol’ american footyball.
Charlie and Guy, both year 11, had played this game before (as had i, but at that time i could only ride and veer slightly) and were looking for some real opposition as anyone who usually played them had very limited maneuvering skills and were therefore easily beaten.
They found this opposition in Myself and my best friend Joey, both year 9.
Charlie was riding his 30" UDC beast
Guy, riding a 18" uni with a nylon rim+spokes (it works) supplied by the bloke who runs circus skills
Joey, a noname 20" freestyle
and me, my brand new 20" Qu-Ax trials
Rules being:
if the ball is dropped, then that play is over
if someone dismounts or touches the wall to balance whilst in play, they are out for the rest of that play
no grabbing or pulling, just pushing an opponent to upd
each team gets a maximum of 3 plays, starting from each end of the quad
if a touchdown is scored, the ball goes to the other team
The game was on.
Guy’s uni was easily most maneuverable, but lacking in speed
Mine and Joey’s being superior in both speed and maneuverability, perfect for blitzing.
and Charlie’s beast, lacking in maneuverability but possessing a menacing height and leverage.
For about an hour we played various strategies and tactics involving trying to charge straight through and using a player as a meat shield whilst the other followed with the ball
some learners even joined in after a while and suddenly the field was full of people wobbling around.
I tell you, if you can find enough unicyclists to have a decent game (4 at least, teams don’t necessarily have to be even) then i cannot recommend this highly enough.
