Ultimate Wheel

Seeing as my unicycle frame cracked several months ago, I have been unable
to ride a uni for some time now. I was looking at my now defunct uni sitting
in my garage the other day and had an idea: What if I could just get rid of
the frame and use the wheel as an ultimate wheel? At least that would
satisfy me until I save up to buy a new uni. Does anyone see any problems
with doing this? Also, if anyone has any tips or links to pages about
learning to ride an ultimate wheel, please let me know. Oh, and one more
thing; Can I take off the little bearing thingies that were used to hold the
frame to the wheel? Thanks a lot.

Yes you can. You need a bearing puller tool to do it tho. Unicycle source sell
them and have an FAQ ( on the UK unicycle.com site at any rate) telling you
how to do it.

I took some bearings off last week and was pleasently surprised at how easy it
was , with the right tools:-)

I don’t know this from personal experience, but I have read that it is harder to
ride an UW made by simply removing the unicycle frame because the pedals are so
far away from the centerline of the wheel. In other words, you have a lot more
leverage to deal with. But it certainly can be done because there is a photo of
a young girl riding one like that in Jack Wiley’s book. So I’d say go for it -
it should keep you plenty busy until you can save up for that new uni!

That would be pretty hard to ride and isn’t anything like riding a regular
ultimate wheel (except for the obvious). The one you have would be more like
doing seat dragging (which is a level 9 skill) and is harder because your feet
are out far from the wheel and makes the wheel wobble back and forth. Not having
the seat dragging would also add to the difficulty as the seat dragging on the
ground does add a little stability to prevent the the wheel from wobbling.

Of course that shouldn’t stop you from trying.

A tip that might help would be to keep your legs pretty stiff on the full
revolution of the wheel so that your legs will counteract the forces that make
the wheel wobble. Also keep your knees slightly bent while doing it. The most
important tip is to wear pants or your legs wont last long.
