UK TV: techno games

Howdy peeps,

I don’t normally read this group but thought those of you with access
to BBC2 shouldn’t miss what I’ve just seen!

The ‘techno games’ (on BBC2 around 6pm each day this week and next)
has a cycling event. The radio controlled cycles have to do two laps
of a track in the fastest time.

The one that won one of the heats today was called ‘loony cycle’. It
was a wheel (maybe 20") with a motor, batteries etc hanging off the
axle to drive it through a chain. It’s steering was the best bit
though - it had two little electric fans mounted one each side of the
hub!

Not only did it work, but it seemed to work well! I think they said
the cycling event is on again on thursday, but it’s worth keeping an
eye on the program just in case. The website for the show is
http://www.bbc.co.uk/robots.

Hi

This radio controlled Unicycle has actually reached the cycle final which is being shown Thursday evening.

It was one of the few entries not too crash, it even recorded a respectable time. Apparently it is built / entered by a school team.

Has anyone attempted building a radio controlled Unicycle that can hover and go forwards? I’ve been wondering for a while just how much processing our brains do just to maintain stability and control.

Not radio controlled but it could be used as a base.
A ‘Segway’ with an additional lateral gyro pac?
http://www.segway.com/segway/
They use 5 gyros at present.

I reckon within 10 years Syd Meads uni-wheel transport module will be a
practical proposition.
Alas I can’t find a URL but it is in his book ‘Sentinel’.

The Segway has most of its weight at or around the level of the wheels. If I
remember correctly, Syd Mead’s one-wheelers had lots of weight up above the
wheel. Those devices would have an awful lot more physics to contend with
before they’re ready for prime time…

John Foss, the Uni-Cyclone
(went to school to be an Industrial Designer so if course I know who Syd
Mead is)

[some stuff about a radio controlled yike]

I’ve jsut had a look on google, and have found the website for ‘loony cycle’:

I love Techno Games

I remember seeing this in the competition. It rocks!

Thaks for the links there Dave

I love electronics and r/c stuff. I got a r/c car (nitro) for christmas, as my old electric one died :frowning:

I may try and build my own r/c unicycle some time, looks cool! But a Nitro one would be better! :stuck_out_tongue:

Joe,

It was entered by one of my local schools, Bolton School. It was in last years aswell, and got to the final i believe, i think it was beaten by a little thing that went really fast though. I think it won one fo the special awards for its design or something.

Is this technogames last year’s one becasue i thought they wern’t doing another one for some reason. if it is last years look out for me:D in the shot putt event. Me, my cousin and my uncle entered the shot putt for the last 2 years so you’ll see us on there if it’s the right one. our “robot” was called “total recoil” by the way.

unfortunately the shot putt event was perceived as having least importance in the robot olympics so our filming day was the last day, which meant we didnt get a chance to see any cool robots like looni cycle. we did get to meet all the techy guys that act as judges on robot wars, which was the highlight.

i have thought about making an r/c unicycle but not like loony cycle, like monocycles instead. stearing would be a bit of a problem though.

Hey, that thing’s a giraffe! :astonished:

Iain, that is cool! I think I do remember your robot (well, the name) from the games, but I didnt take much notice as I didnt know it was you!

I sent away for the ‘robot building kit’ which I really enjoyed. I made a thing out of a pop bottle which swam, with a padle on each side, and battery and motor inside.

I like r/c stuff: see this thread

Joe,
