sync your new ipod to your computer using itunes?
is there seriouly not a single computer savey person that has had to do this?
You might have noticed its a Holiday and many are away from the forums.
You need a special program to do it. That’s all I know.
Im a hater to iTunes and ipods firmware. But try plugging in the the ipod, and I dont know the hotkeys for it, but you hold them down and the ipod wont sync. I also know in itunes you can select to manage the device manually and can take songs on and off with out it synching.
So try that, and put all the songs from your ipod back on the comp, then just do a normal sync with the new ipod so the new one gets all the songs on it.
A computer savvy person wouldn’t ever get into that situation in the first place. They’d be smart enough to have the music always properly saved on the computer with backups.
Theyd be smart enough not to use itunes… =p
Anyways, i remember the keys for windows.
plug in the ipod and hold ctrl+shift. Continue holding those and wait for itunes to pop up and see the ipod in its device selection, then once you see it, hold the keys for another 10 seconds, just to be safe. Then you can go into you preferences and set it manual.
i have the program to do it,its called ipod viewer but i dont no how i could send it to you
5 second google search? http://homepage.mac.com/initgraf/iPodViewer/frameset.html
Looks like Mac OS only though Phil…
well us poor computer savey people may not own a computer with enough hard drive to save our ipod music…
the frustration i was having was due to the fact that is had successfully got my music off my ipod but itunes was not responding at all when trying to reload the music… and it was driving me nuts…
also Jerrick… if you ever get an ipod NEVER and i mean never sync it to an itunes… as long as it doesnt sync to one itunes you can snag lots of music from other itunes and play it on your own…
if anyone wants a good program by the way i found one call idump that worked very well…
but now i have my music and all is right with the world…
Dont owrry about me. The first thing id do to an ipod is change its firmware. =p
But that wouldn’t be you, would it? Hard drives are amazingly cheap these days, probably a little cheaper even now, at the end-of-year sales. You can get a 1Gb external drive for about $100 at Costco.
That’s why you’re having trouble in other words. I’m no big fan of DRM but until it goes away it will affect a lot of music players.
I have no problem with iTunes, it works great for me and I have tons of music, most without any DRM.
What Firmware do you use?
I used Linux for some time but wasn’t really stable!
EDIT: On my nano 1st generation…
I use Rockbox on my 1st Gen Nano… Works awesomely, except I can’t get it to connect to the Mac anymore… so I use my Linux desktop
Id use rockbox as well.
You can transfer (http://www.cnet.com/transfer-ipod-songs/)music easily from your iPod to your PC in windows, you just need to copy the hidden folder on the iPod to your hard drive. To do this you need to make sure your old iPod is enabled for disk use. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1478
Then to get the music onto another iPod:
1.start itunes (with a blank library - hold down shift whilst starting iTunes in windows) http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1589
2.import the “hidden folder” you copied off your iPod in iTunes.
Alternatively there’s a free iPod manager you can use (I don’t know how good it is though).

Good luck.
