Many people said hammer. It must be the most common tool, probably followed by screwdriver.

Red is a three letter color, just as the last answer, 128, is a three digit number. All the other answers were two digits. For the most part, they formed a progression toward three digits. You noticed that the number were getting larger, but that they were remaining two digits (you noticed because you were hoping the calculations wouldn’t get too difficult to do in your head). They informed you that you were about to make the final calculation. Then they gave you an easy one so that you would not be distracted by the difficulty of the arithmetic. Subconciously, the three digits stuck in your mind (being the most recent thing you thought about), causing you to think of a color whose name has a similar “shape”. So you choose red plus the most common tool, the hammer.

Simple. Blue shovel.
