trials rim

i will be ordering a trials wheelset with profile hub in a couple of weeks. and i was just gona get the monty tire and rim, but my friend says that the monty rim is pretty weak and goes out of true pretty often. so i was wondering if there are and other 20" trials rim tire choices out there or just rim that will work with the small sized monty tire.

Alex makes a 19" DX-32 rim that is the same size as the monty rim. I think it looks nicer and I haven’t had any problems with mine coming untrue, but you might have some problems finding one.

Re: trials rim

Hi Joey,

There are a couple of alternatives to the Monty rim out there:

Alex DX32 - This is the one used on Onza mod trials bikes. There’s no
mention of it on the Alex site as I think it’s only available on Onza
bikes… or from http://www.unicycle.uk.com/

Arrow Racing DHX - this is a new one for 2002. At 37mm it’s not quite as
wide as the Monty or Alex which are both 40mm and weighs about 100g more
than a Monty. See http://www.arrowracing.com/default.asp?link=rim.
Unicycle.com is awaiting some samples of these rims I believe.

I haven’t tried either of the above so I can’t comment on them other than to
say they look and sound pretty good and should stand up to trials riding
pretty well.

The main difference between the Monty and Alex rims I’ve seen is that the
Monty is drilled for 12 gauge spokes while the Alex takes 14g. The Profile
(or any other uni hub I know of) hub won’t take the thicker 12g spokes
without drilling out the holes on the flanges. This means that if you don’t
want to drill your hub you need to add eyelets to the rim holes to stop the
spoke heads pulling through - an easy enough job but definitely something to
be aware of.

I’ve been riding on Monty rims for over a year now and never had any
problems with them going out of true or being weak. My wheelset’s seen
plenty 3’ drops in that time but not much higher than that. So I wouldn’t
hesitate to recommend it. I’ve only ever heard of one Monty rim bending at
the hands of a UK rider called Will. I’m not sure of the circumstance
though.

Hope this helps,
Neil

Re: trials rim

There is a branded 19" Alex DX32 on the new UDC Trails
http://www.unicycle.uk.com/shop/shopdisplayproduct.asp?catalogid=153

When making up a Monty rim it is best to use 13 gauge spokes with 12 gauge
nipples. This solves the problems of drilling out the hub.

On the subject of Will… he breaks all his toys!

Re: trials rim

Some thoughts…

13 Gauge spokes work OK with their standard nipples.

Onza/Alex rims work better 2 cross rather than 3 cross with large flange
hubs (Suzue/Semcycle).

Leo White

(Will hadn’t actually bent his rim … just unseated the bearing enough
that the tyre rubbed.)
