I need a strong pair of cranks for a monty trials uni and can’t seem to find one. What do ya’ll use? I’d prefer about 140mm long for torque in off-road situations. I’m running a Suzue hub so they’d have to be square-taper.
I know this topic has been addressed so much that everybody screams when they hear the c***** word. But I did some searching of the forums and didn’t find what I was looking for and I don’t have hours to spend searching. So don’t write a book; just tell me what you use for trials or what you know of that exists in the way of strong cranks.
So how about it all you Monty-Maniacs? What works and what doesn’t?
i use 150 bicycle euros on a suse hub, and i’m quite happy with them, they work well for crank grabbing and the extra torque makes it easier to go slow along objects and up steep slopes, and i’ve also noticed that they help for hopping on/ off things becau
se they make it easier to straighten up your legs
when i got my trials uni i haddn’t realy thought about the benifits of various crank lengths so i just got 125s to match the 20" wheel. at the time i thought that longer cranks would just scrape the ground during turns, however the slightly bigger than 20"
size of the onza tyre cancels that effect out.
i started using 150 cranks when i bent a set of b.e. 125s dropping of somthing a bit higher than i should have,
i had to wait a few days before i could get a new set from unicycle.uk.com,
so i used a pair of cheapo 150s from an old uni i had lying arround, after getting used to what is effectively a lower gear i started to realise the benifits, for trials riding, as soon as i remembered i had ordered a new set of 125s i phoned up roger at u nicycle.uk.com and changed the order at the last minute
however they do squeek a bit, and the longer length means that they will bend more easily.
MuniArt,
I recommend Sugino 140mm cranks. Unicycle.com does not sell them, but
Tommi Miller of The Unicycle Factory does. They have withstood alot of
abuse while on my Schwinn, more than I would have expected. Don’t get
140mm Lascos, it just isn’t worth the money and time to install and
remove (after they bend). With Lascos it is not a question of IF they
will bend but WHEN they will bend.
