Has anyone found some standard (not splined) cranks in the 140mm range
that can take trials abuse? Bent cranks are a little hard to ride on.

My son Daniel and I are buying Shimano bike cranks (left side only) and drilling
and tapping them for 9/16" pedals at 140 mm length. Cut off the excess and you
have a very tough crank at about $12 US a pair (not counting $40 for the Park
Tool TAP-6 taps). The cranks are labeled FC-C102-TY30.
Blessings!

Arthur,
Sounds great! A couple of questions:
Where are you getting the cranks for $6 a piece? They’re about $10 at the bike
shop, aren’t they?
How long does “really tough” last… a month?
Do these cranks have a flat length to them so that you don’t have to build a jig
just to bore a straight hole in them?

$9 Canadian at a local bike shop, WHEN they are available, or $25 for the right
crank+sprocket and left crank as a set. They are the Shimano Tourney (TY30) set.

They seem to last until a drop too big. Daniel has not found out how big that is
yet with these. For the black steel Bicycle Europe cranks it is about 4 feet,
the soft aluminum Lun Chi’s about 2 feet.

They are a bit curvy, but were not hard to drill. The tough part is lining up
the tap when threading.
Blessings!
