Hi everybody,

I’m looking for trial cranks and I found some old Koxx One Light ISIS aluminium cranks. I was wondering, if they would do the job. My other option would be Impact Eiffel Tower, but they are quite a bit more expensive. I also found some KH Spirit, which should be made from stronger alloy, but they are even more expensive.

If you have any other suggestions that are available in the EU, please let me know.

They are for my 12yo daughter. She isn’t doing big drops yet, but who knows what the next years will bring 🙂

Thanks in advance!

When my kiddo broke one of his high end Nimbus unicycles while shooting hoops, I reported the quality issue to UDC. They replied: “a 14 year old boy can be called an adult when it comes to any sport”, and lectured me about their great products, superior quality control, etc., etc. They made unicycling great again, you know 🙂 After reading that, I gradually reduced my business with them. Impact is owned by UDC.

I consider cranks to be an easily replaceable part, so I would not care too much about them being done. I would just buy whatever is reasonably priced and readily available right now. When or if your daughter develops crank-breaking abilities, you will probably already acquire a collection of spares. 🙂

The hardest part to replace is a wheel (either hub or rim or both).

Some K-1 ISIS cranks have compatibility issues though, and that is something to check before buying.

I’m not familiar with the exact model, but my first unicycle was a Koxx with Koxx cranks I think 140mm and they were bomb tough. Mine are close to 20 years old and I’d trust them with my adult weight of 75kg/170lbs. Required durability is related to weight and max jumping height, so less than 4 palettes or under 50kg likely not an issue.

I think the primary issue is length. I think something 125-140mm should work.

KH Spirits would work but have quite a bit of Q-factor - OK but not ideal for trial.

If the Koxx cranks are appropriate length I’d say give them a try (likely no Q-factor).

Otherwise if you’re buying new, look for Nimbus cranks as should be less than KH or trial brands.

And don’t be a dummy like me and forget to put on the spacers for your ISIS cranks. ☹
I couldn’t figure out why those ring things were included in the bag and didn’t put them on. I ruined my cranks and had to buy another pair.

Thank you all for your answers. I was not aware of possible compatibility issues within ISIS (I’ve read something about tolerances and so on in a different thread in the meantime) and the Q-factor at KH Spirits, also didn’t know Impact is owned by UDC.

I don’t know when she will develop crank-breaking abilities 😃 But I think she could do a 4 paletts drop very soon, if not by now (she already has trial competition practice with a unicycle she borrowed from a friend).

The Koxx One cranks should be fine for her at this stage if they’re in good condition. Just check for any cracks or damage. If she moves on to bigger drops, stronger cranks can be added later.

I think priority number one for a 14 year old who isn’t doing big drops is the correct crank length. If her interest is only trials (for this particular unicycle) the koxx light (140mm?) cranks are probably good, but for more versatility I would lean towards a 125mm crank. if she is quite focused on trials then a 135-140mm crank may be better.

I know that koxx has had some kinda weirdness with their crank interface but i’m not sure about the details and which cranks are affected.

One of the cheapest new options for isis cranks are the qu-ax aluminum isis cranks, which should have good availability in europe. The spirit and impact cranks are both quite good and compatible with rollos if she starts working on rolls.

The Koxx light are one of the strongest for trial, she will use it forever.

The issue with the isis spline was on older version than the Koxx light.

I personnaly used the light ones in the past for strong trial and doing 220+cm drops, so there is no issue.
