So now that I can 1-foot idle with my foot on the frame, how do I transition to holding my foot out? Is there a leg position that’s easier – I’ve seen the “fold your leg in front of the uni” method as demo’d by David Stone on tv, and the “hold your leg out straight” method (on some video I downloaded from I forget where)? It seems much harder to balance without the free foot pushing on the frame. Any tricks I should know about for this?
When I first started out with this, it seemed like the instant I took my foot off the frame, the whole contraption came loose. All sturdiness was lost… it just couldn’t be done smoothly. After trying it for a few hours, I got the wheel to kinda “jump” back and forth. I don’t mean jump literally, but it would stop at one of the extremes, then quickly move to the other extreme, stop, and repeat the process. It was very jerky, but it worked. My leg position at this time was bent knee, so my foot was just barely above the pedal’s highest point, but off to the side (away from the cycle). That was the easiest place for me to have it, and I even got it to swing back and forth, which helped keep it a bit smoother. You just have to work more with the foot that’s on the pedal… you have to really force it down, then relieve almost all of the pressure to stop, then force it again. (Oh great, here comes harper). Hope this is what you needed. As usual, reading this will only help a little. So get out and practice! Practice! Practice more! No, Practice!!!
it feels a bit unstable at first but give it some time and you’ll get it.
if your looking for stuff to do with your spare foot, you can just hang it over the pedal kind of bent, or if you want to make life dificult you can rest it on the knee of you pedaling foot.
