Tramping in New Zealand - local contacts?

Hello forums, long time no see.

I was hoping to catch the attention of the New Zealanders here. My wife and I planning on going tramping from Dec 22 to Jan 3rd in New Zealand. We’re flying into Queenstown and planning to use that has a central hub for hiking the Caples, Greensborough, and possibly Routeburn trails. I was hoping to get some local info on what weather to expect, good hostels in the area, and things like that. All I know about the area I’ve read from a book, so I’m pretty lost.

Thanks!

Your post seems almost unaware that UNICON is in Wellington from December 26 to January 10th. The country will be overrun with unicyclists during the period that you happen to be there.

I was not aware. That’s north island, right? Shouldn’t affect me much? I’d love to go but it’s a honeymoon and the missus isn’t a rider.

Not aware, thats hilarious. North island has some awesome tramps, but o’well.

Hostels in the area… have no idea… Google can help you there. Weather will be hot during the day, crisp mornings. Little to no rain.

Since I haven’t been on the forums in awhile I haven’t been following unicon or any of that stuff. I’m still riding, but just not doing the forums thing.

Thanks for the info.

I can’t wait for you to tell your missus.

“Honey, you’re not going to believe this but…”

Man I tried to get a transfer with my company to work/live out in New Zealand but there were no openings out there at the time. That place just seems awesome. Hope you guys have fun!

I know you said hostels, but Jacquie and I will be staying at the Rees Hotel in Queenstown on 22-25 Dec. It seems quite worthy of honeymoon-type accommodations.

Among the other unicycle stuff you’re missing, I’m going on a heli-MUni ride with Nathan and Beau, Scott Wilton and Andy and Irene on the 23rd. Out of Queenstown. Try not to think about it.

It’s a 3-hour ferry ride across to Wellington, and supposed to be one of the most scenic ferry rides in the world. You should pop by for a day or two! Of course it’s quite a ways from Queenstown to the ferry in Picton. Plenty of fun stuff to do in the Queenstown area though. Jacquie highly recommends the Shotover Jet Boat, though we’ve only done it once, in Cancun where the water was warm! Sorry I don’t have any tramping info other than what I’ve read in my Fodors book.
