Training

Ssssshhhhhhhhh,

Don’t tell any one,

But, we have been given permission to ride the Polaris on our unicycles again!
so, I went up to see Duncan Castling to do some training. I am not too much into
this training lark, Sundays are for relaxing, aren’t they?

I arrived at about 2.00pm and did not get out of the door until almost 3.00,
well lots of things to look at and do at Duncan house, (like reading the lastest
On One Wheel - I think thanks to Constance are due there). Anyway, charge off
into the woods chasing all the moutain bikers. It was interesting that several
of the groups knew who we were, from the Polaris (it is nice to be famous or is
it infamous). Admittably we weren’t going down the steep decents with the bikes,
but you can not have everything.

Duncan is increadably lucky not only to like next door to Chopwell woods, but
also to live with in 5 miles of the Derwent Valley Cycle track. Once we had
finish posing in the woods it was onto this reletively flat track to get our
legs moving. It was amasing at the consitancy of the speed we were able to keep
up, with if anything our speed increasing rather than slowing up. That was until
I told Duncan to Stop! I’d seen a pub. One drink later we set off again (that
drink was part of our training strategy - carbohydrate loading). Duncan rides
better after a pint - is this normal?

We stopped in Conset and thought about a different route home only to realise it
was 5.30 and starting to get dark, oops sprint back the same way, at is anything
a higher pace. Duncan had checked his top speed in Consett during a little try
at a sprint and logged 11.6 Mph when we got home with no specific sprint the
computer had logged 11.7 Mph. We had no falls in the 10 miles of riding in the
dark (much to our surprise). We also only had to get of at one point where the
track when steeply down a small ravene. That made 21.7 miles with 99% ridable,
what a route.

I am telling you all this, just to say what fun a 26" off-road unicycle is and
if you hav’nt tried it, then do.

Some one was asking who coined the word Muni, it was Duncan apparently.

Just one question, did hew have those auwfull long cranks on it that day or just
normal four inch jobbies?

He did in the UK but I’m not sure about the rest of the world… More than
likely, incidentaly he is well known in Germany. I met a german fried over
here that way…just came up the street towards me and said “You know this
man?” holding a MUNI leaflet in my face then proceded to ride off on my (now
broken) uni…
