Police: Man Dug Holes In Fullerton Park For Revenge Against Bikers

FULLERTON, Calif. – A man who allegedly admitted digging holes on bike trails in a Fullerton park as payback for nearly being run down by a mountain biker has been charged with vandalism, police said Friday.

Warren John Wilson, 52, faces a single felony count of vandalism, said Fullerton police Sgt. Linda King.

Wilson, who could not be reached for comment, remains free on his own recognizance pending a court date that has not yet been set, according to King.

Holes on a trail popular with mountain bike riders that runs parallel to the city’s Bud Turner Trail at Laguna Lake Park at Euclid Street and Laguna Road began appearing in mid-June, King said.

About 50 of the holes, measuring about 1 foot by 2 feet, have been found since June, all dug across the path so that they would pose an obstacle to bicyclists, King said.

Tree branches and brush were often placed along the trail, as well as across the trenches in what seemed an attempt to hide them, King said.

Some riders reported that they were thrown over the handlebars after hitting the holes, but no major injuries have been reported, she said.

A park ranger reported the holes to police, who periodically did surveillance in the area. Detectives checked the trail after a man walking a dog was spotted, and vandalism was found, King said.

On Dec. 11, the same man with his dog was seen entering the trail and leaving it 15 minutes later, and a later check showed holes covered with a large piece of concrete and a branch, King said.

When questioned by police, Wilson allegedly said that he had “almost been run over” by a bike rider once and, in retaliation, began digging the holes and placing obstacles on the trail, King said.

I’m glad they caught the man. He made a wrong choice on how to handle his frustrations.

I was deer hunting a piece of property once and was sitting at the property corner. The landowner of the adjacent property who didn’t like hunting brought his dog down and chained it up on the other side of the fence from me. In my humble opinion, it was a pretty stupid thing to do; tie up an irritant next to a man with a gun then leave the area.

I encountered that once while riding my bike around back when I was in grade school. It was fishing line strung across a dirt road. The likely culprits were kids who thought it would be fun to snag a car. Kids don’t always understand the unintended consequences of their actions if they would have ended up snagging a motorcyclist or bicyclist instead.

Darn, I was hoping this thread would be about that kook who spams the MTB forums and newsgroups with his diatribes about the negative effects of tires on trails and wildlife… I think Mr. Holub shared some of his writings with us earlier.

Instead of prison, these “Nazis” should simply be sent to the hospital to have the sand removed from their v*ginas.

A fitting punishment would be to make him ride a bike on a trail and tell him its full of camouflaged holes. Let him sweat it out as he rides.

Of course there would be no holes.

when i was into biking, they were talking about people who would nail down the front half (upramp) of a teeter totter.

picturing racing up a teeter you think is going to totter!

also, they mentioned a dad was out for a ride with his two sons, fell into one of these ‘trenches’ broke his neck and died on the trail.

cut holes in the floor of his house and cover 'em with carpets. Let’s see him cope with death pits when he stumbles to the bathroom in the early morning!
