I have been away with the Morris dancers this weekend. One stop was at Ashridge Park in Hertfordshire, England. In the park is the Bridgewater Monument, which is a tower with a spiral staircase leading up to a viewing gallery at the top.
The tower is 108 feet (33 metres) tall, although the gallery is probably only 90 feet (27 metres) up. It seems higher, though, as the tower is on a slope.
From the top, you can see over the canopy of trees (the park is heavily wooded) and you can see for miles. The gallery is an overhanging balcony, square, and about 3 feet ( a metre) from the tower to the railing.
So I had to take the uni up and ride it. :0) The girl on the door asked no questions. I carried the 20 up (me in full Morris costume with flowery hat and bells) and idled for a few seconds on the balcony before riding a lap or so in each direction.
I’m not too good at heights, and I found it surprisingly difficult to balance. I can ride the 20 with my eyes closed, but riding it with them open, and the nearest visible ground over a hundred feet away was difficult. Nothing to focus on… and this nagging feeling that if I did UPD, the rail was just low enough for it to be a UPDeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!
Another 'trophy moment’on the 20, to go with my small collection, which includes the top of the keep of Warwick Castle, and the top of a church tower near Bristol.
