Tour da Yoop: The Missing Wheels Ride for Disabled Kids

sadly were both cockerless:(

Hey Uni-Steve5111 and Musketman,
Why not post a new thread specifically about this, you will probably get some good ideas. Maybe you can buy parts from different folks and use one of your existing seats. See what people have!

Isn’t there also a tradingpost forum on this site? Maybe you already posted there. Have you talked to your folks? This is a really big undertaking. If they are behind you going, maybe they can figure out ways to help you earn/raise the money to get one!

Good luck!
Blake

I THINK ILL BE OK, I CAN GET THE MONEY BY NEXT SUMMER. wHAT ONE SHOULD I GET? THE kh 29ER OR A CHEAPER 36"ER?

Of course - I was thinking of martins as in small birds similar to swallows.:o

Hey that sounds awesome Blake- you weren’t kidding about organising a tour were you! Seems like you’ve had pretty good progress and interest already.

Website looks good- better Dreamweaver than Frontpage (I had to figure out Frontpage and website stuff too- pulls hair out)

All the best and keep us updated,

Ken

How tall are you and how tall are you planning on getting.

I’m 5’-6" I comfortably ride a stock frame and tire coker with an air seat. If you’re smaller that that, see if you can get an answer from UniTyler, I think he’s on the small side of folks on the forum.

Great that you’re thinking you’ll be able to get the UNI!
Blake

i think i might save up for a kh 29er, that be good enough ey? The only reason why i think i should get a 29er enstead of a 36"er is because iam getting into some longer offroad rides and i could actually use the 29er after this u.p. thing, the coker would just sit in da garage most of the time.

A method to your maddness. Good thinking!
Blake

yea im about 5’ 5.5" som a 29er will do good

My uncle Bob is making me a custom 27" at his bike shop for this…he said he’d make it amonth ago before the Tour Da Yoop (BTW which i think is sooooooo awsomely awsome!) was known but he still is’nt done! i think he’s putting a brake and air saddle and all that good stuff on it! Gosh i’m gonna have to start conditioning soon! O yeah Podzol i think i found another 14 year old…my friend said he would love to come along if he can find a 29"

A quick comment on 29 versus 36. On Unicycle Across Minnesota (479 miles over 9 days) most people used 29 with a high pressure tire. Big mistake to say the least. Those that used a Coker on that trip had a much easier time. While times have changed since 1999, I would still suggest going with a Coker for a first long distance unicycle.

If you are going with a 29, make sure it has a bigger tire.

Hey Guys,
Listen to Andy Cotter about the 36" . He knows a lot more about this than I do!

Blake

Blake,

Brad was riding a Coker at age 9. I think he was under 5’ tall at the time.

Bruce

Bruce,
Most impressive photos!! He must be quite the rider!!
Thanks!
Blake

So now what? am i going to be the only one with a 29"er? i really really really want a 36 but myuncle just won’t order it for me! he says “you won’t be able to get up hills with it dude! just stick with a 29” and bring 2 sets of cranks: one for speed and one for hills." please tell me if any of you are riding anything smaller than a 26" Thanks

HI Unicyclerpunk,

Have your uncle read this thread! You uncle must know physics, tell him that the amount of work you must do to get up the hills is the same on both uni ( almost), the coker is a bit heavier. You move the larger wheel more slowly bot go as fast. Take a good look at a topomap. There is one on the site that gives you the gist that it’s pretty flat. go to topozone.com (It used to be a good place for free topos if it is still operational) You will get a better idea for the hills. Honestly I climb hills better on my coker than on my bike. I have longish cranks, that helps a ton!

I’m to bed early tonight, so I won’t get to your web page, but I’ll work on it tomorrow after work. Your picture will look nice bigger than an avatar!!

Good luck!
Blake

It’s not that he does’nt know that its just that he doesnt want to order me a coker cause hes making me a 29". I can’t wait till he finishes it! it’s taken him like 2 months to work on it and he’s still working!!! so who else is riding anything smaller than a 28"?

Question For All Considering

Hi,
THe tour is tentatively 400 miles and 14 days.

Are you interested in going, but two weeks is two long?
If the tour were fewer days/miles would you be more likely to attend?

Thanks!

Blake

Well, I’ll be graduating in May, so I’m not sure what job I may or may not have in August…but there’s of course a chance I wouldn’t be able to get off work for two weeks. 400 miles in two weeks is about 28.5 miles a day. One week would be 57 miles/day. That would be pretty strenuous but I guess doable with training. Maybe we could shoot for a 40 mile/day, 10 day tour. For instance, we could start on Saturday, August 26, and finish on Labor Day - Sept. 4., then participants really only miss one week of work.

If I can figure out how much money this would cost me I may join you unicyclerpunk on the 29er. We will just have to make sure to train harder than anyone else. I also already have my 29er and so the coker would be much pain in terms of cash and the like.

Does anyone have an idea how much it would cost to ride in this?
