Gazaloddi 26x2.6 on Planet X BMF rim. Takes two tyre levers and a screwdriver to get off, even with all the moving it to the middle of the rim stuff. Although now I have some metal tyre levers ready for next time I have a puncture.
Took about 15 minutes for 2 of us to put it back on last time too.
The hardest combo I’ve ever had to deal with are the 12 1/2" tyres on my daughter’s bike. They’re Nutrak ones, with “snake and sable” tread, unknown make of rims. Absolute sod to get the bead over the rim - I had to resort to using a metal tyre lever, and did check at least once that I’d actually bought the right size of tyre.
Apart from that, the only one I’ve always had to use levers to fit is the TA 36" (both on the old QuAx steel rim and the Stealth Pro). It’s a lot easier on the Stealth rim than on the steel one, and can almost be pulled over without levers.
I use Conti Gator Skins on Mavic Open Pros on the road bike and they’re quite tight, but can be pulled on without levers (just).
Duro Leopard 26x3 on Alex DX32 - really easy.
Richey Z-Max 26x2.1 on DX32 - really easy.
Panaracer 26x1.5 road tyres on Sun Rhino rims (tandem) are pretty hard - usually have to use levers to fit.
Try-all white on a the try-all reinforced street rim. It is a real pig to get off, definatly the hardest I have had to remove. Oposite end of the spectrum, tyres come off the 07 kh29 rim realy realy easy, you dont even need tyre leavers. It hasnt ever popped off whilst riding tho so its all good.
I have the same combo, and I’ve had to do just what you fear many times on the trail. No matter how old the tire, it never gets much easier. Breaking the bead is the worst part - there are channels inside the rim where the bead essentially locks in after the tube is inflated. Breaking it out of that channel post-flat is really tough. Then you have to center the bead on the opposite side of the rim to get enough slack to use a tire lever. When I’m soloing, a flat can mean up to an hour of downtime.
Once I flatted while riding with Hans in SB. He broke the bead with his fingers and got the tire off the rim and back on again in under 15 minutes without even using levers. It was rather impressive.
I have been doing tires for years, so even the monster isn’t so bad. 17 " is the rim size, the tire is the same size as a 24 Duro, but fatter and 10x as thick.
To break the rim seal, use c clamps.
Leave the tires in the sun, a cold tire is stiffer.
Put the tire on the ground and kneel on it to keep the bead (the metal wire inside the edge of the tire) in the center of the rim, opposite the side you are trying to pry off. If you can’t get get it to pry over the edge, that is what you are doing wrong.
A bowl of soapy water and a brush to generously lube it up is also helpful.
