Why is the hockey team from toronto called the “Maple Leafs” eh?
Shouldn’t it be Maple LEAVES? I mean c’mon. Learn to pluralize stuff correctly.
Any of you canadiens know a reason for this?

Yes, but the word “Flyer” doesn’t, to my knowledge, have a special pluralization. Words such as leaf, hoof, goose, and deer have them, but flyer does not.
It’s not like it’s the Philadelphia deers.

Yeah, I have no idea what a flyer even is. I know what a flier is (a paper that someone hands out).

Apart from the improper grammar, what team would want to be called the Leafs? It should be something intimidating. Like, “GRRRR, we’re the LEAFS! FEAR US!”
But then again, whenever they win, the other team has to say they were beaten by a leaf.
Well it’s a patrioitism thing. Canada has the Maple Leaf on its flag, so the team is the Toronto Maple Leafs, often just the Leafs.
I checked urbandictionary.com for a definition of ‘Philadelphia Flyers’. Check out the 3rd suggestion!

check your spelling of philadelphia in the link and try again. But still the fact that the misspelling brought up the leafs is pretty funny.

Wow, I’m sure Freud would have something to say about my inability to spell PHILADELPHIA. I spelled it wrong (although differently) in my first reply as well. And believe me, it was unintentional.
The Leafs only have to win 4 of the next 5 games to advance!
Oh yeah? The FLAMES only have to win 3.

I think the reason they’re not the Leaves, is cause then maybe other teams would come up with taunts calling them maples and telling them to leave, or something like that.
