I've growing interests (not all that high, but growing) in an 8' uni. I've
searched high and low for a 6' that isn't Semcycle (a.k.a. on that isn't
$400) and I've found none. If I'm going to splurge $400 or so for a uni, I
figure I might as well go for an 8' for a little more. If anybody here has
bought a custom uni from Tom Miller, I'd love to hear about it. I'll call
Tom tomorrow, but do any of you know how much this project would be (closer
to $500 or closer to $800)? Thanks so much!

Yes, it’s a good idea to ride them before you pick which one you want.

Of course you can get injured on either size. But consider the height of a
drop. On a 6 footer your pedals are only about 3.5’ off the ground. Change that
to 5.5’ on the 8 footer, and you have a much bigger jump and harder fall. Plus
a heavier unicycle that is more prone to damage if it gets dropped (no matter
who made it).
Also allow me to add:
d. If you ever end up as a performer, you’ll find a lot of stages are too
small for an 8 footer. Elementary schools and comedy clubs, for instance,
often have low curtains (or ceilings) that will prevent you from using the
8’ in a show.

A second on Tom’s quality. He knows more about building unicycles than anybody.
If you’re going higher than 6’, definitely get it from him. It’s worth the extra
money for your own safety.

I know the feeling, we all like to get higher! Before you spend that kind of
money, here’s some things you might want to consider. -Have you ridden 6’s and
8’s? Two feet doesnt seem like much until you’re on the 8’ uni. -From my own
experience, a 6’ is much more practical than an 8’.
a. 6’s are much easier to transport (especially with a take apart top) and
can be forced into most vehicles. I can fly with my 6’ and not pay
oversize baggage fees.
b. With some practice a 6’ can be freemounted with relative ease, safety,
and consistency. An 8’ isnt impossible to freemount, but MUCH more
difficult. I’ve only seen it done twice.
c. I cant think of anyone I know that has been injured riding a 6’, but I
do know people that have injured themselves or others with an 8’.

Tom makes great unicycles. I have a 10’ that Tom made in 85’ for a little over
$200. I think the current price may be well over $500. This 10’ has a smoother
ride than my Schwinn 6’ giraffe. Tom also makes a good solid 6’ that you can get
with a take apart top. Tom’s uni’s are excellent in their quality and built like
tanks. If it werent for the weight (and that I needed a 6’ the next day), I
might have had Tom make my last 6’ instead of getting a Semcycle.
