Today (29 December) is the last day this year that is neither the last day this year nor the last day this year that is not the last day this year.
Klaas Bil
Today (29 December) is the last day this year that is neither the last day this year nor the last day this year that is not the last day this year.
Klaas Bil
And what about December the 30th?
It’s neither the last day of the year, and neither is it the day that is not the last day of this year…
Klaas Bil, did you forget that December has 31 days?
Sorry!
Make that:
And what about December the 30th?
It’s neither the last day of the year, and neither is it the day that is not the last day of this year…
Klaas Bil, did you forget that December has 31 days?
um.
Last day this year = 31st
Last day this year that is not the last day this year = 30th.
So, the 29th is the last day this year that isn’t the 31st, nor the 30th…
Thanks for asking. I stand by what I wrote though.
Today (30 December) is the last day this year that is not the last day this year.
Klaas Bil
Today (Dec 30) is the penultimate day of the year. That kind of makes the day sound important and special.
Today (December 31st) is the last day of the year. I guess you could say it is the ultimate day of the year. It seems pretty similar to all the other days of the year, except there is a bit more celebrating.
Hey Rowan, you could say that before me, but I planned to say it too so here goes.
Today (31 December) is the last day this year. Happy Old Year!
Would 29 December have been the penpenultimate day of the year? That sort of words takes the fun out of it (I think).
Klaas Bil
Penultimate has always struck me as a strange word. I think of ultimate as being big or significant like the ultimate prize. And here penultimate means second to last. There’s nothing big or significant about being second to last.
Yeah, ultimate can also mean being last in a series, process, or progression. Then penultimate makes sense. But my brain isn’t wired to use that definition of ultimate as the primary definition.
The Dutch word for that is ‘een-na-laatste’ or ‘voorlaatste’. Literally ‘one-but-last’ (which English uses too), or ‘pre-last’. We have a word for penpenultimate, and even penpenpenultimate etc. We say ‘twee-na-laatste’, ‘drie-na-laatste’ etc. Very practical but no fun. Wait for new installments in this thread.
Klaas Bil
ooh,let the nail biting begin…
how many pen’s in front of ultimate do i need to referance yesteday?
How many do you need to reference tomorrow?
Let’s talk about today, since we have sailed into the new year here already.
Today (1 January) is the first day of the year. (yeah right) Happy New Year everyone!
Klaas Bil
Today (2 January) is the first day this year that is not the first day this year.

Today, (3rd January) is the first day this year that is not the first day or the second day of this year. This thread could go on forever. Tommorrow will be the first day this year that is not today, yesterday or the day before yesterday.
Today is the last day but not the first day that I will stop visiting this thread about the days that are not and are today and not yesterday or tomorrow.
Feb 5th isn’t the day before my birthday nor is it the day after it is my birthday.

Yes but you make it too easy.
Today (3 January) is the first day this year that is neither the first day this year nor the first day this year that is not the first day this year.
Klaas Bil (not too tired yet)
Today (4 January) is the first day this year that is neither the first day this year nor the first day this year that is not the first day this year nor the first day this year that is neither the first day this year nor the first day this year that is not the first day this year.
