Today Show unicyclist

I received a call today requesting that I appear on the Today Show on NBC
this coming Monday morning at around 8-10am EST to demonstrate the
unicycle part of that bike-that-becomes-a-unicycle thing which is on sale
at Hammacher Schlemmer or some other fancy retailer. Anyway, I will
apparently get a few moments to show a few tricks on the unicycle. Just
wanted to mention it in case anyone is interested.

The showis allowing meto provide a few web-links. I thought it made the
most sense to include:

  1. The USA website link (www.unicycling.org/usa/)
  2. UNICYCLE.COM
  3. The burgeoning Unatics webpage (www.newyorkuniycle.com).

Hoping I don’t embarrass myself (tho aware that it might mean more website
hits)…

OK, it’s www.newyorkunicyclist.com – not the one above which is missing
the first C. That error, luckily, has not been sent to NBC. I gave them
the correct address.

DONT DO IT DAVE! It is a cheap piece of shit! Actually, Do it, but bring your own seat, otherwise you WILL embarass yourself trying to ride on a 20 inch wheel, with a seat post ahtas about 4 inches long.
There is no way you could do ANY cool stuff on one of those cheap things. I couldnt, in good conscience promote that thin on the air to people who want to join our club, because the first piece of advice we would end up giving them is “get rid of it, and get a real uni.”

By all means, I think it is a good Idea to get our publicity, and this is a great way, but we should put on our website that this is not a recommended unicycle, and will NOT help you to learn faster. Say what you need to to get our airtime, but there has to be some kind of retraction of this endorsement on our site.

You are probably going to try to pull up the front handlebars, and ride it like a uni, but it is just not that easy. Definately get AT LEAST15 mins on the Thing before you go on the air.

Other than that, have fun, and good luck.

Re: Re: Today Show unicyclist

DAMNIT DAVE THAT IS NOT OUR SITE ADDRESS. We are www.newyorkunicycle.com NOT www.newyorkunicyclist.com
I hope thats not what you sent.

just, remember not to look Katie Couric directly in the eye or you will turn to stone.

Thanks for the notice, David. We’re riding in a parade Monday morning but we’ll be sure to set the VCR to record. Looking forward to seeing it.

That’s BIG PRESS for unicycling! I hope you have said yes.

I looked it up in their online catalog:
http://tinyurl.com/7hi

As for the vehicle, I am way not-impressed. Anything you don’t show a
picture of in your catalog, nobody should ever be fooled into buying. Notice
they don’t show the whole thing. I suspect this is because it’s not a
“bike”, but more likely something like two unicycles connected by a
cross-bar. Sounds like a vehicle with a high fun-potential, but it should
not be described as a “bicycle” and a more accurate description (read:
picture) should be provided.

I have ridden similar vehicles, in the form of one that Tom Miller made in
the 80s, and the Super Trick Cycle which came out a few years later. They
can be cool for shows or playing around on. However, aside from the presence
of two wheels, they are not bicycles.

Hopefully you will have plenty of time to play with the thing to work out
some stuff. Assuming it’s the vehicle I’m thinking of, you can do some neat
stuff with the whole cycle together, such as really tight circles (almost a
spin), riding with one wheel on and one off the curb (hard to show in the
studio), and riding it on an angle (both wheels turned to one side. On the
unicycle part, you’ll probably look like an adult trying to ride a kid’s
unicycle, probably with a lovely Savage seat.

To help prepare, practice on a 20" unicycle with the seat as low as
possible. I think it’s a 20" wheel, they left that out of the product’s
description as well…

$149 is quite a decent price for such a vehicle, assuming it works. I’m
interested to see what one actually looks like…

As the President of the Unicycling Society of America, I highly recommend
you list your sites in this order:

  1. www.unicycle.com
  2. www.unicycling.org/usa/
    and I don’t recommend
    www.newyorkunicycle.com

Remember you are going on a national TV show. The Unatics site is almost
devoid of content at this point, and does not link to the other sites. It
would only appeal to local riders. The Unicycle.com site is what the most
people are probably looking for, and does include links to the USA and other
sites. The USA site does not link to Unicycle.com.

Have a great time on the show! I hope we get a chance to tape it.

You bet. I will fill in blanks as I find out more info.

David Kaplan (unidak) demo’ed it at a trade show and basically hated it
as a bike. He said the uni part is fine.

I am only going to ride the uni part – but I’ll try the whole thing in
case I can do a few tricks on it that the host can’t do.

Yeah – so I just called the members in charge of our site and begged that
we can get a few more pix downloaded and a few links added before Monday.
I know that it’s a nat’l show, but it would also be nice for NY uni’ists
to join us, and I thought it couldn’t hurt to have our site listed – IFF
it’s in better shape by then.

How did the Today show manage to find you? And more
importantly, are you going to put any moves on Katy Couric?

what would be cool is if we could talk D,stone into picking out a secret word or movement that only we would know.

what i mean is,he does somthing obvious for us to see on tv, so its kinda like a shout out incognito.this is just like posting a message of hello to us in the mind.

maybe sneek in the word “choclate foot”. or afterwards when they ask you what you think of it,you say “well i sure would’nt want to ride against traffic eating sushi while talking on the cell with it, but the price is right”

Re: Today Show unicyclist

Looks like that show is 120 mins starting at 7:00 AM. It says that is Eastern
time, but maybe I am looking at a web page that is customized for my timezone.

In the “COMING UP ON TODAY” box:
“… And Corey Greenberg takes a look at the latest bikes and bike gadgets”

Just the right length for recording at “SP” speed. I’ll post a video if I am
able to capture it.
