Today I....(non-brag)

Hey, first “Today I…” post of 2026… Nice :cowboy_hat_face:

Today I finally got to ride the Huni Rex for the first time! After having gotten pretty comfortable with riding a 36er, I felt like I was ready to step up to trying a geared unicycle. As much as I would like to try a Schlumpf, it is waaaay out of my price range  So the Huni Rex was the next best option. Here are my first impressions:

  • I decided to jump straight into trying to freemount it. It took me a few minutes to get the feel for it; it’s like mounting a 36er, but I didn’t really have the benefit of the momentum from jumping over a big wheel  So the freemount is more of a slow, gentle, precarious balancing on top of the wheel while I try to crank it forward.
  • After getting going on the Rex, it’s actually not too bad IMO. Cranking the pedals doesn’t feel very different from pushing a 36er. The big difference, of course, is the height. Compared to the 36er it feels like I’m dragging my butt on the ground!
  • I fiddled with the chain tension trying to get the wheel perfectly centered, but I think I have one of the two chains slightly too loose so it creaks under load. Will need to do a little more tweaking before the next ride
  • I was able to get a feel for cornering on the Huni Rex. Considering how close the pedals are to the ground and how wide the uni is, I didn’t try to corner too tightly. Thankfully I was able to sufficiently navigate corners without pedal strikes :slightly_smiling_face:
  • I ended up doing three laps of the college campus, which ended up being roughly 4 miles of riding with almost no UPDs. My one UPD of the ride was when I got to the entrance of my dorm, tried to get off, and ended up tripping and falling onto the ground :face_with_crossed_out_eyes: I’m much more used to getting off of much taller unicycles, so I didn’t expect my foot to get to the ground so soon. I thought I had re-sprained my left wrist again, but it turns out my hands were so cold they just weren’t wanting to cooperate (It was about -2°F/-19°C). Now that I’m warmed up I’m feeling better, thankfully
    • Other than that one UPD, I thought the ride was great!

  • Equipment wise, there are a few things I’m likely going to add or swap out:
    • Mine came with metal pedals almost identical to the DX Metal Pedals off of UDC, except the studs looked different. I swapped them out for plastic pedals with more aggressive metal pins
    • The standard saddle appears to be an older model Nimbus saddle, which I swapped for a newer Nimbus Stadium saddle off of one of my other unis
    • Definitely going to need to get a longer seat post
    • I think a bar will be a big benefit
    • Brakes, brakes, brakes :uni: I’m thinking of equipping it with cable actuated V-brakes with the best pads I can find

Some other thoughts on the Huni Rex:

  • I think UPDs will be a little riskier being the rider is position much lower to the ground (as evidenced by my failed planned dismount  ). I’ll see if my opinion changes with more time in the saddle, but that just might be the way it is with the Huni.
  • My foot position is noticeably canted outward due to the wide spacing of the pedals. I’m hoping it’ll improve somewhat when I get a longer post, though I’d imagine it’ll still be wider than ideal. Needlessly to say I probably won’t do much hard riding until then.
  • I have tried successfully in removing the wheel and re-installing it into the frame. The process was a bit time consuming and a little finnicky. If I ever get a flat during a ride, I will most likely shake my fist angrily at the sky, yell “WHY”, and figure out how to get myself home
  • Despite all of the potential downsides written above… I think I’m going to have a lot of fun riding it! :uni: :dashing_away:
