That’s what I was referring to with “regular VCX+”, though maybe I could’ve added “VCX+ Short”
I do have a pair of those lying around at the moment. I was thinking when I lace up my second muni wheel I’d take off the long ones from the 36 and put those on the muni wheel. Then the shorter triple holes would go on the 36 in its place
Yesterday was the comeback of long rides. I asked my parents to drop me in a city 80 km south of my home and then came back using a really nice bike path. There was a strong south wind which ended up being always tail or 3/4 tail wind, and which helped me quite a lot.
I started really strong and kept a speed over 27 kph for the first 75 km, before getting painful quads and having to slow down a bit.
I ended up getting new PRs on :
50 km (1:47:19)
80 km (2:58:16)
90 km (3:22:33)
100 km (3:50:57)
I also got my second KOM on strava, on the whole bike path (63 km long) and top 4/6 on parts of it (with several hundreds bikes recorded on it, even more than a thousand on one).
I don’t know what I could do on a flatter path with better pavement and no road crossings, but no tail wind, but I think I could (if I had a good enough place to do so) go for a 100k WR attempt.
I might have finished the ride with an underpressurised tire because this morning, my tire was flat due to a slow puncture.
Today I have a brag, but on behalf of a non-unicyclist, indeed a non-human.
It turns out that getting a fast pace while exercising our dog isn’t about me choosing a bigger wheel or even using a Schlumpf hub. Today I was just riding my starter 24" with 115mm cranks, but the dog was in such athletic form that I was spinning like crazy as she pulled me along, even overtaking bicycles. We averaged 14km/h (8.7mph) over 15 minutes of asphalt, gravel and mud, and reached a max of over 18.5 km/h (11.5mph) at over 170 rpm. Not the fastest we’ve ever gone for a short stretch, but keeping up the pace for so long was really fun. However the sustained speed was definitely down to her, not me!
I bought it a couple weeks ago, though there was still much snow and ice on the ground so really all I could do with it was stare at the nice red paint on it… As can be seen in the pic, the snow has cleared up nicely, so I figured today would be a good day to finally give it a try.
The hardest part for me was figuring out how to get onto it. I eventually settled on a solution that involved me sort of wedging myself against the wall (I probably look very strange doing so) and using the garbage can to hold myself up, standing on the right crank at the 6 o’clock position, getting my foot onto the other pedal at the 12 o’clock position, and then sort of pushing the saddle between my legs rather awkwardly. I don’t quite think it’s the right way to do it, but I guess as long as it gets me in the saddle then it’s good enough I will happily take any sort of guidance when it comes to that though
Once I was up there I was amazed at how high I was sitting! I just had to sit for a solid minute or two just to kinda regroup my thoughts and contemplate the series of events in my life that somehow inexplicably led me to be sitting on a 5 foot giraffe unicycle… After that, I turned parallel to the wall and got used to the feeling of how it moved under me. First it was some gentle idles, then I tried moving forwards and backwards relatively slowly.
After dismounting and re-mounting a few times, I eventually worked up the courage to move forward past the corner of the house (after a relative of mine moved his car) and ride unassisted. Honestly once I was going it wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be, I was able to ride the short length of the driveway and dismount off of the back without hurting myself! After that, I figured I’ve done enough for the day… I tried riding a regular uni shortly afterwards and it felt strange lol
Hats off to you for riding your giraffe for the first time.
I brought a 6ft giraffe just before covid so I stuck it in the loft and sadly it has stayed there since
I don’t want to risk a twisted ankle or any injuries this side of summer so towards the end of summer I’m planning to get it down and either ride it or sell it.
In my defence I have been as focused as I can be with freewheel riding which is coming on well but that’s another story.
Well, after a 45 minute practice session, I’ve got static 180 unispins back. SIF landing with SIF backwards and back to seat in. Not the prettiest as of yet, but fairly smooth and I’m hitting the pedals, not the cranks.
I’ve still got the flick and jump for crankflips, but can’t flick quite hard enough to get the full spin, old bearings might be a contributing factor to that as well.
I used silicone to “glue” the figure to the hub - it’s currently curing. The wheel shall be installed tomorrow and I’ll see how well it sticks. Since it’s so close to the axle and the wheel is rotating at low rpms, I’m pretty positive that the centripetal forces will not be big enough to send the Smurf flying.
