The whole neighborhood now knows that I unicycle.
I tend to think that by now the whole town should know that I unicycle, yet I still encounter people who stare at me because they‘re obviously surprised to see a unicyclist cruising around town.
Yesterday I landed my first 180 unispin. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/5iVeoODMNUo
Congrats! How long did it take you to get there?
I started Tuesday night and got it on Wednesday afternoon, though I’m still not consistent so that part with probably take some some weeks to a month.
Started on Tuesday and got it by Wednesday……the joys of been young!
Well done though
Oh, I was expecting weeks or months, not a day or two. I should really have a go at this, but I’m a chicken . At least I have an excuse for the next weeks - have an injury that needs to heal completely before I can think of unispins and such.
I say, just put on some shin pads and go for it. But obviously, wait for your injury to heal… or
Yeah, wrist needs to heel before spinning the uni
Not much of a brag, but the weather has gotten much nicer lately and I was finally able to take the 36er on some mostly clear roads
For the past couple weeks it’s been snowy and the temperature has been hovering at around 0°F (-17°C) so I’ve been doing relatively short rides on my Hatchet. Recently however it’s gotten much nicer, at a much more comfortable 30°F (-1°C). Still “cold”, but after a couple weeks of single digit negative and positive temps, it feels so much nicer.
Being that it was so nice today I took my 36er out after a couple weeks, and man… I really missed riding it I am so ready for more of this snow to clear up, but I’ll take what I can get for now. It’s nice just to be able to take the 36 for a longer ride
I actually took my 36er out for a ride this week myself as the ice had (temporarily) cleared away. And after riding 29" for a couple of months something struck me: Riding a 36er is outright Cheating! It is so effortless that it’s ridiculous.
It is a very nice 36" unicycle. Is the rim good for the rim brake?
Yeah, i totally agree. i have done too much smaall wheel riding
An interesting frame with clamp collars for the bearing holders by the look of it - a tidy way to do it. Is it bespoke or was it off the (old) shelf?
I was concerned @SirCranky might pass out in shock at the copious length of your cranks, but I’m relieved to see he has survived well enough to have posted just now. Your setup seems to be ‘Lanky Cranky’ compared to his ‘Stubby Hubby’
@holyroller This is among the last 36ers George Barnes made, and probably Norways first 36er! @Rusty Rode it so hard and long that the tyre was to the kevlar, the cranks were bent and the hub finally snapped. Then he gave it to me And I had it in storage for half a year until a friend offered to rebuild me the wheel and I could finally experience the wonderful world of long distance unicycling
The machine is really heavy. I think 125s are okay. Or perhaps these?
Also, as it happens, @SirCranky is also currently set up with 125s on his 36er Nevermind that it’s geared
@Felgenbremse: it’s is an old Air Foil rim, and @Rusty took off the brakes cos they rubbed. My wheelbuilder discovered that the rim was uneven at the welds, and braking sure was awkward til I wore down that bump, and still is, actually. But it does the job!
Thanks for the video link - really interesting - a 4-cross wheel surely has class!
Are those 125s? For some reason they look so much longer to me in your photo - I was thinking they were 165s or more. I wouldn’t call 125s lanky cranks on any reasonable wheel size, especially not a 36er (125s were the shortest I could manage on my 36er, and I went back up to 137s because of the local hills).
Different kind of rim for sure, but my Nimbus muni rim I had a step at the join (which only became an issue when I re-laced the rim facing the other way). I filed and sanded it down until it was smoother - doesn’t look pretty but braking is much improved / quieter
You have sharp eyes indeed! These are actually ultra long 127 mm cranks. I thought I would get a way with boasting short cranks in a bragging thread!
On the ungeared I have actually gone back to 100 mm cranks since i am unable to get a decent speed on such long cranks.
While on 36" with schlumpf i will likely move from 150 to 142mm cranks shortly.
I’ve been running 114mm cranks on my 36er for a while now (shortest crank hole for the VCX+ Long cranks), though I’m thinking of switching to a pair of the regular VCX+ cranks to give 100mm and 125mm lengths a try. For now though 114 feels like a sweet spot
Fyi there are tripple hole cranks with 100/125/150mm.
I have found these to be more useful since both 100 and 125 mm give decent speed and 150 mm for longgg climbs. Meanwhile 114 mm is a very good allrounder but 142 and 170 mm are way too long for normal riding.
