Hey, Unicycling in South Africa is quite a new Oddity so I’m a bit clueless…
HAHA
We are doing a race on a Nimbus 36" called the 94.7 challenge, thus 94.7 km…
I did a 40km race today( not dismounting once), I had an awesome dash to the finish line, this one old, “grannypa” , he surely couldn’t live with himself if a Uni beat him! HAHA he won though, with the crowd cheering and him laughing I crossed the Finish line in 2h30!!!,and felt good except for my butt,
I just have a few questions:
What is the best way to handle hills, stand up or what??
Downhills damn they are more difficult than the hills what to do??!!
What can I do to make my butt not hurt so much… like the correct shorts and pants etc??? Or lubes!!!
For unicycle related topics, post in Rec.Sport.Unicycling. That way you’re more likely to get a fast answer.
Uphills. Try to pedal as “smooth” as you can, think “circles” instead of just pressing the pedals down. Also try to hold the handle if you don’t already do that.
Downhills. Get a brake.
Try bike shorts. Some say a handle like T7 helps but I’ve never tried it myself.
First of all, your post is very much unicycling-related and would therefore be better placed in the other forum, Rec.Sport.Unicycling. Might draw more responses there. This forum (J.C.) is just for chatting about all kinds of stuff.
You’re not the only unicyclist in SA though. GILD springs to mind but there are more of those odd people.
Depends on the steepness of the hills. If you can handle them while sitting, that would wear you out less. Stand-up if it’s too steep to sit. Possibly use longer cranks. Again, longer cranks would help too. What length are you running now?
Many people find uphills more difficult. A brake might help you with the downhills.
Depends on the “kind of hurt”.
Chafing is tackled with lube, e.g. something called Butt Butt’r, also wear cycling shorts that are long enough so that your leg doesn’t contact the seat.
Sitting pain or sore muscles: use a more comfortable seat, maybe a gel seat or an air seat. Not everyone is fond of them though, especially not the air seats - but some people swear by them.
Numbness (not something you would call “hurt” though) can be prevented or its onset delayed by using a good seat, Kris Holm Freeride is praised by many. I’ve heard that it goes best together with non-padded cycling shorts.
For sitting pain and numbness it also helps if you can lean on a handle and so take some of the weight off your butt.
