All I see on this forum now is people telling eachother to use the search function. I think we should start helping people out. I know, it gets tiring answering the same questions over and over but bitching at people about it and telling them to use the search is not necessarily the answer. Sometimes it is just as easy to help someone as it is to force them to help themselves. Teach a man to fish I guess, but sometimes I feel like we are turning people away or being dicks to them because they are new to unicycling and newsgroups. I’m noticing it on every forum I frequent except my own. But I never remember it happening on this forum a year or 2 ago. Discuss.
I usually help people and THEN tell them to use the search function next time.
Then again, I can understand why they can’t find anything. The search function sucks. I usually do a site-specific Google search or something to find stuff.
I find this is a very patient forum.
The other one I’m a member of (the Lost forum - Hey, no laughing at the back!) is really, REALLY intolerant of new people who post questions that have been asked before, so much so that it puts a lot of people off posting.
Which can’t be good for the forum, right?
I think a lot of times it’s just about interacting with others who have similar interests. I know that a lot of times I can use the search and get information that I want but it’s not completely about the information. It’s also about having current interactions with all of you who frequent these fora. Sometimes it’s like a group therapy thing too; it’s fun to start a thread and hear from others who might be having the same problems with riding that you are. And it’s always helpful to find out that there are better riders who are willing to help YOU with YOUR problem. It feels a lot more personal and encouraging than just doing a search and reading some 2 year old thread about doing a static mount or whatever. The people here have always been super helpful and friendly and supportive and have helped me out more than I can say. And THAT is what this site is all about to me.
yes
Each other is two words.
I think its okay to tell people to use the search button as long as you help them too…the search function really is quite helpful, after all. But a one line reply of “use the search” isn’t much help. But tell someone to use the search, then write an answer to his or her question, that is a good way to do it.
Well put, I feel the same way.
Thanks, JJuggle. Had I been writing a paper I would not have let it slip. I get lax on the forums sometimes.
i hate it when people say “use the search button”. I just help’m out with there questions. I dont like using the search button. Its easier just telling them.
Dude, use the search! This topic has been talked about before. Try searching for things like, “use the search”, “search button”, or “search function”.
Haha, just kidding with you.
juggle only has one j
I’m tired of people telling me to ‘discuss’.
Maybe, I don’t want to discuss.
Maybe, I want to read.
Then again, maybe I’m just fickled
I think i have seen a thread on this before use the search bar to find it im jk haha yeah i agree we should help people.
This quote
is from THIS THREAD.
This seems like a good idea. Testing the search function to see if it returns what it’s supposed to while at the same time providing at least one link and introducing new users to the search function and its parameters. I’ve answered alot of questions, provided alot of links, and given alot of hints for search criteria. I agree that a response such as “use the search function” is useless. However, the more people we introduce to the search function the more we will all find out about how to use it effectively. Telling people to search “RSU” and “titles only” for example when searching for help wheel walking rather than searching for wheel walking occurances all over the place.
I agree. Like I was saying, I know it is sometimes better to teach a man to fish (use the search) than to give him a fish (info), but is it worth it if we have to be rude to people or scare some of them away?
Fifteen posts on this topic already, and noone’s even tried searching yet?
That just ain’t right…
If wheel walking has been discussed last year and a new person wants to learn about it, he or she should read the old thread. After all, everything that can be said about wheel walking has already been said. In fact, there is little need for new discussion at all. We should all just “use the search” and live in the past. No new posts. All threads should be locked and the New Thread button should be removed. Besides, the new people bring NO new ideas to the forums. We’ve said it all already. The ship has left the port.
Actually, I agree with the wise and venerable Obie. New discussion leads to new ideas. We are here to learn things. We are here to have fun. AND we are here to interact with our fellow unicyclists. Not just sit around using the search.
I hate when people find old threads and then respond to them (I always read several pages before realizing it’s old news). They should be flagged a different color. Better yet, I would like threads that have lain dormant* for three months to be locked. They are for archival purposes. New threads should be started, which can include a link to the old discussion (the old discussion has ended, so you must respond in the new thread).

- Raphael, is “have lain” correct?
Well I’ll be damned… you forgot to switch to your Miss A account though.
james potter speaks the truth
just for the record i almost came up w/ a new trick that no one else had dicussed so that was a new topic and why using the search button was useless that time
I’m with him and underdog. And also, as we are all individuals and have a slightly different take on things, I might find something new on a new thread
or not find exaclty what I’m looking for on an old thread.
