No, not going to use the tire that was offered. No improvement over my current BA 2.0.
A lot of people I’ve talked to just use their mountain tire on their KH29 for road use. I don’t mind it for short rides, but boy the weight of it really drives me crazy.
I think I’ll just wait and get a 36 at some point, which would really be better for longer rides anyway I suppose.
OK, I just got back into town and this morning I took the tire out of the closet and snapped a pic. It’s a 29 X 2.0 folding clincher. It arrived a couple months ago. I really just offered it because Unishark seemed like he wanted one badly and I had one just sitting there. But I guess if anyone else is hot for one, I’ll send it out. Let me check my PMs–someone may have already posted an address. The deal is: I send the tire first, and PM you my P.O. box so that when it arrives safely, you can shoot me back the 25 chickens.
I have been using a Maxxis Crossmark. While it is not a road tyre per se, I find the rolling resistance to be quite low, and there is no buzz when riding on pavement. It also handles the muni I have been doing quite well.
Quite possibly. Sorry, I am running a Qu-Ax 29" Cross wheel, so not sure what size rim it has. I would measure, but it is in storage after breaking the frame.
Not sure it would make a whole lot of difference for the wide rim, but you might try Schwalbe’s new Big Ben tire. It’s very similar to the Big Apple, but with a beefier tread, so might be a little more stout overall and more resistant to popping of the rim.
SCHWALBE MARATHON SUPREME UPDATE:
Martin…your new tire is on the way. I’ll PM you the tracking number later today. Make sure to post your review after you roll around on it for awhile…enjoy.
Interesting thread resurrection - even if it’s a spammer who unearthed it!
Went through the same questions recently. My KH29 with its rather wide original rim had a Super Moto X. Which was a bit of a tank at 1.3 kilos! Then @Siddhartha_Valmont gave me a Maxxis Grifter (also in 2.5” width) and I saved 500 grams - which is a lot especially as it’s edge rotational mass. I’ll probably shave another 150 grams by switching to a TPU tube.
So far, I’ve been enjoying it, stable and way better for accelerations and catching balance.
Last fall for the CFM road climb I got the Schwalbe G-One Speed Pro 29.5x2.35 for my wide rim and I like it a lot. I weighed mine at 588g and use it with a lightweight TPI tube. Totally smooth tread and rolls nicely.
