TinyURL on Tech TV

Looks like TinyURL got mentioned on TV. Never seen this show before, but
it’s pretty coold to be mentioned. They have a write-up at
http://tinyurl.com/4iq look at the “Daily discovery” section.

Cool! Congrats…that’s always a neat feeling. It’s a great idea for a
service that is very easy to use.

I guess word travels fast…

Re: TinyURL on Tech TV

I posted your URL in the cafepress user groups to help some people with long
URLs that they were trying to post.

Looks like the idea took on:

Re: TinyURL on Tech TV

maybe you should put a “donation/tip” page on tinyurl.com and try that model
on for size. it worked for selfpromotion.com and I’m sure it could earn a
few dollars…

I like the amazon.com payment system (for those who don’t have or want
paypal accounts), plus it lets you keep a tally: http://tinyurl.com/4j2

I just added a paypal donate button. We’ll see what happens… right
now, I am just curious how much traffic the LockerGnome thing will bring in.

Re: TinyURL on Tech TV

do you know if it got mentioned in his actual newsletter?

I remember he mentioned ihateclowns.com once in his newsletter (before he
was on techTV) and it brought in a nice amount of traffic

Re: TinyURL on Tech TV

How much traffic are you seeing with Tiny URL? Is it becoming really well
used?

There were about 7500 pageviews last month, but that doesn’t include the
pageviews that resulted from incorrect urls.

Since you’re discussing your stats . . .

How many “forwards” did TinyURL do in that time – how often is the average
TinyURL used?

Well, I have the field in the database to count this, but never added
the line in the code to increment the value, so I couldn’t tell you.

Going based on the status 302 the apache logs show, there have been
31174 redirects in April. Currently there are 6003 entries in the database.

Re: TinyURL on Tech TV

You know, something just occurred to me . . .

You should have an abuse policy in place and an abuse@ e-mail address
(registered with abuse.net) because eventually somebody’s going to use
tinyurl.com to include their affiliate links in a spam. (It’d be cool if you
had a mechanism set up so that you could quickly change a spammer’s tinyurl
to point to an anti-spam resource)

It hasn’t been an issue, but I did put something in the “terms of use”
that can be found at the bottom of the page. If spam does get reported,
then I’ll create an anti-spam page. Using TinyURL for spamming is pretty
pointless, since I can easily change the url.

That doesn’t mean that people won’t try it. Spam promoting web sites should
be equally pointless because your host/upstream can just close your
account/connection.
