Tibetan Singing Bowls

not being one to ask strange questions or anything…

went xmas shopping yesterday
turns out the missus’s been thinking about getting me a DVD player
had a look at a couple and decided to hold off on the DVD technology till the recordables become more affordable
(it’s a long debate that i really dont want to get into here)

then she remembered that i’ve always wanted a tibetan singing bowl and suggested that we go looking at some of them
(just call me yin-yang man, it’ll be fine)
eventually found one in a flea-market
but now to the question i have for u this morning

i’m used to the singing bowls being completely smooth bowls that sit very snuggly in the palm of your hand while u play them (btw, if u have no idea what i’m on about here, u may want to go back to ‘most replies’ )
the one we found, had a 1/2inch high ridge around the bottom
making it possible to grip the bottom of the bowl
allowing for more pressure and a much louder tone
according to the flea-market stall owner (that repository of wisdom), these ‘rimmed’ bowls are rarer and generally accepted as better quality bowls

i’ve been googling all morning to try n verufy this but have come up empty
i haven’t even seen a pic of a bowl simmilar to the one he had there yesterday

can anyone tell me if this bowl is indeed as rare and as good as he made them out to be?
or did i simply get the sales pitch?

anyone?

This is even stranger question than mine, on the drawing/work tablets. I think I might have seen a singing bowl sometime but I’m not sure.

after a short google searh

They sound a little like steel pans.

We have a singing bowl at home with a flattish bottom. Not sure if it is Tibetan though. I think I’ve never come across one with a ridge.

Steel pans? Must be the quality of your PC speakers I guess. Oh and I find it funny somehow that you have the graphic tablets thread with 5 posts all for yourself. Obviously I couldn’t post that observation over there.

If you really don’t know what I’m talking about with steel pans go here: [ulr=http://www.dlc.fi/~pan-ari/]Steel pans etc… There’s even “How to make your own steel pan page”.

And about that poor little thread of mine. Everybody just hates me or there are no people interested in graphics here.

That url was garbled but I got there. It is what I thought it was. Those steel pans are really different imho, they resonate a tiny fraction of the time that a singing bowl does. Singing bowls can go on for minutes. Also, the singing bowl’s tone is purer (still with a lot of harmonics, though) and has been credited with healing powers. New age, you know.

Funny, I wrote ulr, when I wa supposed to write url. Too bad I can’t fix it anymore, because there’s only ten minutes to fix it.

I didn’t know that about the bowls. But that explains some things I was wondering about.
