this has nothing to do with unicycling.

Does the name Mumia Abu-Jamal ring a bell for anyone? Though he was born, raised, and has always lived in america, I bet he is better known outside US boarders. If you know who he is, please reply with your country of origin.

thanks in advance,
mike

Re: this has nothing to do with unicycling.

I’m from the USA and know who he is.

I suspect you are wrong about his being better known outside the states as here. He’s been out of the news lately, but his is a high profile case. His cause is well known among African Americans and the radical left as he is believed to be an innocent victim of a frame up. He is known universally by the left who oppose the death penalty and his sentence whether or not they believe or claim to know whether or not he is innocent (Michael Moore, for example, has stated that he is probably guilty which infuriated many on the left). And he is known by the right as another criminal whose case has been taken up by “extremist nut-job civil libertarians” and “black radicals”.

Hey onetrack, without looking it up, do you know who Danny Faulkner is?

There used to be posters in my neighbourhood and at the university trying to get people to write letters of protest to someone about Mumia Abu-Jamal. It was never a big thing in the news however, and the posters are long gone now.

Re: Re: this has nothing to do with unicycling.

Yes, Daniel Faulkner was a police officer working for the Philidelphia police department. He was murdered on the early morning of December 12th, 1982, on the corner of 13th street and Locust. Daniel pulled over the light blue VW Volkswagon Beetle of Wesley Cook. He was shot twice once in the chest, once in the face, an act that would widow Mauren Faulkner. There was an unusualy strong police presence that morning. It would later be claimed that Officer Faulkner had interfered with the graft, bribery, and corruption that has been proven to have been present within the Philidelphia PD.

The above is what I know without looking anything up. I heard about this case about 6 years ago and have tried to learn as much as possible. I have heavily researched both sides of the case.

Re: Re: this has nothing to do with unicycling.

not true, I was watching the news about 2 weeks ago and learned that the NAACP had recently called for a new trial for mumia. Shocking I know. I only watch independant news broadcasts (with the exception of The Daily Show).

yes
south africa

(what kind of research are u doing here?)

Re: Re: Re: this has nothing to do with unicycling.

OK, so I meant “main stream” media.

And I’m glad to see you’re not only looking at the one side. Too many people who claim an interest in the case don’t even know the murdered police officer’s name.

I for one, knowing a little (and by a little I mean a little) about the history of Phildelphia and its police department have no reason to believe framing Mumia Abu-Jamal isn’t something they’d do. However, I’m not familiar enough with the details of the case to be able to say whether he is innocent or not.

I have met very few people who are aware of the case. From what I have read, I got the impression that Mumia is better known outside the states. This was supported last friday when I met a french girl who was in a foreign exchange program, she knew who he was, though no one else at the party (about 20 people) did. So I brought it here the most international forum that came to mind.

so far
2-united states
1-Denmark
1-South Africa

Mumia was named an honerary citizen of Copenhagen

Re: Re: this has nothing to do with unicycling.

Michael Moore is probably the best Republican documentary film maker we’ve ever had.

PS Quiz: what band has done BIG benefit concerts for Mumia?

Re: Re: Re: this has nothing to do with unicycling.

While I’m tempted to say U2, I have to guess that it was Rage Against the Machine.

Re: Re: Re: this has nothing to do with unicycling.

Linda Ronstadt? The Dixie Chicks? No wait, it must have been Lee Greenwood. Yeah, that’s it.

You’re playing dumb.

Re: Re: Re: this has nothing to do with unicycling.

Re: Re: Re: Re: this has nothing to do with unicycling.

Definitely Rage. You got it, wentz and onetrack! They are the band to go out on a limb in a BIG way.

Onetrack, did Michael Frante really do a benefit for Mumia?
