think of buying a 26" what do you think

QU-AX Unicycle 26" LUXUS does anyone know if it will take a bigger tyre and are they any good?

I’d also appreciate any opinions on this model and whether it’d be suitable for a heavier learner. About 100kg or 220lbs for those of you in US. I haven’t been able to find too many others in Australia.

What are your reasons for wanting a 26"?

the qu-ax luxus 26 comes with the red hub, which makes it a stronger unicycle then the 24 inch version. you can change the tyre to other 26" tyres, of which there are quite a few to choose from.

Not a bad uni. There are some concerns though:

  • The seatpost clamp is a single-bolt quick-release model - it resists only limited twisting of the saddle. But it’s interchangeable (not welded to the fork or something), so you can easily upgrade it if you dislike this.
  • If you’re heavy, you should switch the tire (only rated for 3 bars, the qu-ax website wisely doesn’t say a word about this)
  • The pedals are a bit slippery. Better use pinned ones.
  • The cranks are a bit on the long side (152mm), at least for my taste. If you’re tall, they may be perfect.

@ twisties:
As a total beginner, I would start with a smaller wheel. It will be easier to freemount.
If it won’t be your 1st uni: think about the style of riding you want to do. The Luxus’ pedals and cranks are not fit for high peak forces, so you have to be careful with dropping.
The Qu-ax Cross is the more stable model, but it doesn’t feel as agile (for there is more momentum of inertia in the wheel); by the way: its 24 inch tire is so fat that it’s got the same outer diameter (-> same speed) as the stock tire of the 26" Luxus.
I ride both, and if I had to choose I would take the Cross… but of course it’s more expensive too.

About the tire clearance:
A search on the German forum revealed that the fork should accept a 2.5" tire - but consider the rim width. I’m not sure wether this is a good idea.

Thanks ewok. Good info.
I’m actually waiting reply from one of the members here selling his old KH 24.
As for style of riding, I intend to work up to commuting to the train station and from the train to work. Losing my license soon so I need an alternative method of transport.
Not really interested in tricks or anything… not yet anyway :stuck_out_tongue:

How about the Nimbus 26" MUni?

That is what I just ordered from UDC. Their site gives you lots of options and if you want to change something that is not available on the order page you can give them a call. They are really good to work with.

I went with the longer seat post because I am tall (6’3"), upgraded to the KH 137/165 crank arms, red frame, yellow clamp, and ordered a slick tire because I will do quite a bit of riding on pavement. They did not list the saddle upgrade to a KH if that is what you would like, but I am sure an over-the-phone order would take care of that.

I am not sure what options they have if you live outside the US, but like I said it would be worth a call to see what you can figure out. Maybe this is outside your price range, but thought I would suggest it anyway… I have read a lot of good reviews on this MUni, and talked with someone that owns one and loves it.

Unfortunately, my research thus far has ended in over $200 for shipping between the US and Aus. I’m sure a better deal could be worked out but it’d need to be a one-off, with a different carrier or packed differently.

I’d spend a bit more on it first off if A] I was absolutely sure ill stick with it and B] I wasn’t anticipating a huge speeding fine from the motorbike, and moving out soon…
