so i was just riding around my small town for about an hour on my cx (a literal pain in the ass) looking for something to do. i made a large circular round trip of about 6 miles, which, on a 20" tire, takes really long.
out of boredom i began studying driver reactions and their driving behavior. i noticed that some people, usually those on the phone (illegal in CT!) must have thought me a bicycle, and contiued on driving without making room. others, however, just as when walking, were super-duper cautious, and swerved totally into the other lane just to make room for little ole me on the shoulder. also, interestingly, when there is a string of cars passing, they all follow exactly what the leader does, as if they are unable to decide what to do on their own.
therefore, i think that drivers are either so distracted that they fail to notice the unicycle, or are so distracted by the unfamiliar vehicle that it scares them
I am a “rider” and I always go as far into the other lane as I can when passing a bicyclist, pedestrian, skate boarder, unicyclist, or whatever. I believe better safe than sorry. I live right near a middle school and I see how inattentive kids are to vehicles. Assuming there is nothing coming in the other direction there is no harm whatsoever in swerving over and avoiding an unfortunate accident, however unlikely that accident may be.
If there is another vehicle coming in the other direction, I will generally slow down as much as possible to the extent that it is safe.
Flesh is fleeting. Best to preserve it for as long as it will last.
When I ride on a busy street where people in cars go fast I notice that none of the cars make room for me and on less busy streets even with a paved sidewalk people drive over the double yellow line into the opposite direction of traffic for me when they see my unicycle but on my bike or anything else I ride they don’t give me any more room than the people who don’t pay attention on busy roads and in my neighborhood don’t have paved sidewalks just lines painted on the ground, I have almost been hit twice and almost run over by someone driving on the sidewalk or too close to it about four times.
hahha nice topic
yesterrday i was riding on the street and i passed trought a car that was stoped …
There was a woman inside the car waiting for the green to go…
she looked to the unicycle and stayed looking… the red become green and the cars ahead of she started to moving and she stayed lookink, when she decided to move on the red was there again! aahhaha
i’m wondering how long it will be before i cause an accident because when i’m unicycling often people in cars will drive by and turn almost all the way around before snapping back to attention. it sort of worries me. however, yes, around here most people pull into the other lane or slow down until the car in the other lane passes and pull into the other lane. most people are really friendly to bicyclists and unicyclists around here.
The other day when one of my mates found out that i uni he said “is that thing even road legal, i mean when you fall off you will get hit by a car”. This made me wonder how many other people would think like this on the street becase i am suprised at the effort people go to just to get out of my way.
