Last October, when the Congressional Gold Medal was awarded to the Dalai Lama, monks in Tibet watched over the internet and celebrated by setting off fireworks and throwing barley flour. They were quickly arrested. It was for the release of these monks that demonstrators initially turned out this month. Over the last two weeks as protests spread over Tibet, at least 100 people have been killed.
It was the Congressional Gold Medal that sparked this, because it made Tibetans believe the American government was genuinely considering the Tibet issue a priority.
In fact, it was just an empty gesture, designed mostly to make American lawmakers feel good.
The Tibetans still don’t know this.
Before more get killed, maybe Bush should get on TV and tell them:
"I prefer to let China genocide Africans and steal Tibet, cuz I keep my child labor sweatshops in China. I’ll stick with China. We like Dalai Lama, cuz he don’t make no trouble. He’s not a fraction of the trouble that Gandhi was.
But the medal was an empty gesture, so get back under China’s thumb. Know that we won’t back it up." --GW Bush
