Hey guys, my 8th grade science fair is coming up, and I’m stumped on what to do! Any good ideas? :o
Maybe something with a unicycle??
Thanks!

Most kids just let their parents make the project. Ask them!
Well, im not one of those kids
I’m sure there is a lot you could do with unicycling, physics is the first thing that comes to mind. I know I didn’t learn any physics in middle school, but there are some more simple concepts that could be applied.
Good for you.
I also think you should avoid the usually stuff… Do something UNIque.
This website has some pretty cool things. Especially the steam boat.
http://sciencetoymaker.org/boat/index.htm
demonstrate a gyroscope, and report your parents for neglect if you get a bad grade:p
show a video of the gyroscopic uni
BillyTheMountain beat me to it. =P
Also, here’s a short video on angular momentum.
He mentions a bicycle a couple minutes in.
That’s what I was maybe thinking, but I have no idea of what I could do with physics and unicycling. I get where you are coming from, because that’s what came to my mind too.
You could do something like how different crank lengths affect distance, speed, and torque, or even throw in different wheel sizes as a variable or something…
There have been discussions here on JC and RSU about the dynamics of turning a unicycle and those two wheeled gizmos plus their motorized counterparts. Ask the judges to remember riding their bikes with no hands and think of what physics were involved. Then explain it to them.
Use science to make a caterpillar all large like the size of a medium man on his side, put two wombats in a caterpillar suit and study them interacting, preset your findings in chart form.
+1
Again, “Good for you!” as MP Uni said.
I’m not a science person, so I am just chiming in with support for your project here.
Let us know how it goes.
Post your results, etc.
hah, you have to do science fair…me too and I’m a senior at my school. (WHY OH WHY!?! T-T)
Anyway, you need to test what effect a variable has in a given scenario. Like, comparing the the distance traveled by a 20" uni in five revolutions vs. a 24."
In this case you’d be varying the size of the wheel and could draw all sorts of scientific conclusions.
You could build a catapult (or use a nerf gun) and figure out what the best launch angle for distance is.
You could see if salt water evaporates faster than fresh water.
you could leave food out and compare the mold growing on processed foods to the mold on organic food.
you could microwave leftovers in a sealed container vs. an unsealed container and stick a thermometer in them to see which one gets warm faster.
You just need to compare _____ to ______ and see which one is better (or more explode-y). The choices are endless!
yangus has some good ideas.
what about wheel size and crank length (the old chestnut)
you could discuss leverage and probably write a little script in python with wheel size and and crank length as variables and output mechanical advantage and other unicycle related values.
Thanks for the ideas guys! I decided im going to see the effect of music on how fast someone rides 2 miles on a bike. It will be indoors to eliminate weather and terrain variables, and I would do more than 2 miles, but sadly, no one would want to be my ‘test subject’ if I did more. Haha soo yeah! The levels of the IV are no music, music with a positive message, and music with a negative message!
Umm…haha I WISH I COULD DO THAT! that would be awesome if I could grow a caterpillar that large and get some wombats, but sadly, I don’t have the knowledge to do either of those things!
