The tenth one is especially handy. Exodus 34:10-26 (summarized here):
Do not worship any other God for I am a jealous God.
Do not make cast idols.
Celebrate the feast of unleavened bread.
The first offspring of every womb belongs to me.
No one is to appear before me empty handed.
Labor for six days, rest on the seventh.
Celebrate the Feast of Weeks with the firstfruits of the wheat harvest, and the Feast of Ingathering at the turn of the year.
8 ) Do not offer the blood of a sacrifice to me along with anything containing yeast, and do not let any of the sacrifice from the Passover Feast remain until morning
9)Bring the best of the firstfruits of your soil to the house of the LORD your God.
Do not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.
And Exodus 34:27-28 says:
27 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Write down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.” 28 Moses was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights without eating bread or drinking water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant—the Ten Commandments.
There you have it, these are the REAL Ten Commandments as described in the Holy Book itself!
wow, thats a really bad excuse for saying the Ten Commandments are false, because some other people thought it was wrong to kill people, wow, your a genius, the whole bible must be wrong then.
It’s pretty lame how people attack the bible, and try to mess up the meanings and make it seem like a bunch of balonie, by using stuff like the leviticus laws. and messing them up, what you guys should do is look up the words they used for the certian meanings, in there respected language, and look up all the meanings, atheists will take these meanings, and take whichever one makes the least sence, whereas christians take the one that makes perfect sence, as it was made to understand, im probaby pointing in the right direction but not saying the right words for this.
But those are the ten commandments, and those bring corruption, adultry, stealing, killing, cussing ect…they corrupt. So no wonder people should not be alloud to do so, because things go better without such corruption.
That’s not what I’m saying, brother…you totally put a bunch of words in my mouth. I’m saying that what is commonly thought of as the Ten Commandments is NOWHERE in the Bible said to be the Ten Commandments, whereas, this list of that I have posted, Ten things God wants you to do, is explicitly titled, THE Ten Commandments.
Anyway, you can’t easily look up the “words in their respected language” since all the books of the Bible were written in what is now a dead language.
Obviously people are going to take everything out of context, Christians just as much as Atheists. For example, it is indeed true that the Bible says that Jesus said, “Love thy neighbor” and “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you,” but it is also true that Jesus said “Do not think that I came to bring peace to the Earth; I did not come to bring peace, but war.” (Matthew 10:34) and “I have come to turn a son against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter in law against her mother in law – a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.” (Matthew 10:35-36)
It is true that those passages are indeed in the Bible, the words of Christ Jesus himself, yet for some reason Christians never quote these passages.
Why not?
Our church is very stern in learning the original audience in the bible. each book was written in the context so that a certain group of people at a certain time period would understand it well. no part of the bible was specifically written for 21st century americans. I am not sure of the original audience of those you mentioned, however…
If you read that next two verses after Matt. 10:36, it reads:
37"Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; 38and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me."
I think he was making the point that if you put anything else before GOD, it is wrong. he’s not telling you to hate them (your family). and the translation I have for 10:34 is not ‘war’ but ‘sword’ … I think the sword is the word of god…
And remember, folks…the world is in black and white. Atheists are crazy, misquoting nutjobs, and Christians are nice and sensible, and more importantly, never wrong.
Potter, are you sure you have translated those scriptures correct? Jesus was says in the following verse (37) that “Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; (38) and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. (39) Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” Basically, Jesus states that one must love him (Jesus) more than anything in this world. All the things of the earth will pass away but in the end is Jesus.
As far as that passage, Jesus was preparing the twelve apostles to go out and preach a message to the lost people of Israel.
Mat 10:22 “All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.”
I hope this answered your question. If not, I apologize and I’ll try to do better. May I ask you something, Potter? I see you’re the top poster here! It’s nice to share a discussion with you! SO may I ask you a question?
I think you may have that backwards, BUT in the end, we’re all imperfect mortal sinners. The difference between everyone is who or what they trust and believe to be the truth, and what they put their hope in for living beyond death.
True, so you’re not allowed to love your own family as much as Jesus…if its a matter of choosing your family or your religion, a “true Christian” will choose his or her religion.
What I got from 39, “whoever loses his life for my sake will find it,” is that he’s saying sacrificing ones own life in the name of God will get you into heaven.
Sounds familiar, isn’t there another religion in the news lately who has been killing themselves in the name of God, or should I say Allah?
Same thing, innit?
Well, I didn’t really have a question, I just felt like discussing this, because the Bible clearly states that the above list in my original post are The Ten Commandments, even though most people follow another set of rules under the same name.
Anyway! Yes you may ask me a question (:
For the first thing:
Whoever loses his life for my sake will find it – Dying as a Martyr (someone that kills you because of what you believe)…this is not similar to what you were thinking which is Jihad - Killing in the name of Allah. If you die by man because of your faith in Christ, you will find life with Christ…VERSUS: Killing infadels and yourself guarantees you 77 virgins in heaven (the pinnacle of the teachings of Quran).
Second, (this is not “the” question), where did you get that list of the Ten Commandments? It’s not the same as the NIV or KJ/NKJ versions.
Finally, I wanted to ask you (and thank you for being polite), since it seems that you’re so interested in discussing about the Bible and/or it’s validity:
What, in your understanding, is the root message of the Bible?
(Not just James Potter, but everyone in this discussion feel free to answer that last question. The answer may surprise you. Most Americans should know this, reguardles of religion or faith)
Like This Guy I Know said, you’re completely wrong with your interpretation of the Qur’an, which I have read (an English translation anyway) entirely.
First of all, there are two types of Jihad: a Greater Jihad, and a Lesser Jihad. The Lesser Jihad hardly matters at all for salvation. The Greater Jihad is not a holy war, but a holy struggle. It is a personal, internal struggle to fight Shaitan’s (Satan) temptations, to keep up your Salat (the five daily prayers) as well as the other four of the Five Pillars of Islam. The Lesser Jihad is what people misinterpret all Jihads to be, which is that if someone attacks your Muslim community, you have the right to defend/fight back. God does not like the aggressive types who attack first, verse 2:190 says, “God likes not the aggressors.”
Unfortunately, some Muslims believe the same things you do about the Qur’an, and this minority of Muslims are the Extremists who make the news all the time.
And the Qur’an says ABSOLUTELY nothing about 77 virgins waiting in Heaven. It is certainly not the pinnacle of Quranic teachings.
It is the same list as found in all Bibles. go to this site for the passages, and you can use the dropdown menu to check many different Bible translations, all of them say the same thing.
The Bible, to me, is not really one book with a single meaning. It was written by many different people, all of whom had a different understanding of the Truth.
However, Christians (those who follow the teachings of Christ Jesus), should do just that: follow the teachings of Christ Jesus. He was a pacifist, and mostly taught nothing but to love one another, even your enemy. Jesus’s main message to all was nothing more than Love.
The entire Bible, of course, has many different meanings, it is a book of universal law, a book of predictions for the future, a history book, and more.
I agree with CKCrowe, James Potter you are a bad man, and you made me cry.
Not really, I haven’t cried since they took Melrose place off TV…
… As for the topic of this thread.
I don’t think you can just read the bible now, in English, in today’s society and expect it to mean exactly (or even approximately) what it meant when it was written.
Not only are there the many many different interpretations of what we have to read now, but what we have now isn’t all that reliable in its accuracy to what has been translated through languages and dialects. Much like the line “Where for art thou Romeo” doesn’t actually mean “Where are you romeo?” like I’m sure I wasn’t alone in misunderstanding.
I remember watching a documentary a while ago on discovery science about people de-bunking the story of Moses, and they discovered that “the Red sea” was actually a mistranslation of “a sea of reeds”. So I wonder how many other similar mistakes there are in the many complex texts of the bible.
I don’t have much more to say on the subject, so now, I shall take my leave.
Speak for your self. I’m as perfect as I’ll ever need to be (except for the fact that I don’t eat my Brussels sprouts), my consciousness is immortal and my only sin is trolling JC …and that last one is arguable.
Have you ever lied, looked at a women lustfully, did something your parents told you not to do, cuss, use the lords name in vain, if you have, which you have, your a sinner. Then the others like worshiping other idols murder ect…
Maybe he’s imperfect in your opinion, and the opinion of some old guys a few thousand years ago.
But in his personal belief system, these things do not make him ‘imperfect.’
I’m in a real biblical mood today. This is one of my favourite NT passages because it vindicates one of my favourite characters: Judas. The 1st matyr. Suprisingly, not a saint and yet without whom the whole plot of that book would lose its edge.
