The perfect Muni boot / shoe

Hi all,

I’m on a quest to find the perfect muni boot or shoe. I’ve been using a great little Merrel shoe but I’m tired of my ankles being whacked. I don’t like the feel of ankle protectors which leads me to a light boot with a slight padding at the ankles. The boots that I’ve been trying have too soft of a sole for hops and drops. What is being use by you folks?

Re: The perfect Muni boot / shoe

Lots of people prefer more rigid shoes for foot protection off drops. However personally I prefer
using soft shoes because you get better grip on the pedals. If you use huge square pedals it
really helps bruising, compared to the smaller trapezoidal pedals.

Ankle protectors can be low profile and quite comfortable- have you checked out a brand called
Ankle biters? They can fit in any lowtop skate or hiking shoe and don’t increase ankle support,
but they do protect your ankle bones.

My favorite shoes are the Axo Dually, but I’m not sure about availability right now.

Superfeet brand insoles really help with arch support for soft shoes. I added a pair of these to
my Axo shoes and it helped a lot with support.

The ‘old style’ AXO Dualies are only available in odd sizes (12+ or 4-). The new shoe does not have the integral ridged ankel cups or gator. Many sites still show pictures of the old shoe- but stock the new one. Nathan made mention that he was the victem of such a marketing snafu; I think he ended up sending the shoe back…

Re: The perfect Muni boot / shoe

Yes that’s true. But the pair of old style ones I initially thought was too
small stretched just a tiny bit and I’ve been very happy with them. I
ordered one size larger and received the 661 model, and it was way too big,
so I sent it back. And I NEVER have trouble with shoe sizing! If they fit
you right, the new ones are probably fine. Bronson just got a pair today and
was wearing them in the office breaking them in.

On http://tinyurl.com/1a7 they list 19 US sizes but only 13 Euro sizes. I
think they really only come in the 13 Euro sizes - too much variation from
one to another. Note the picture shows the old style, which you will not get
if you order.

Another great thing about these shoes is that the sole seems to be very
resistant to wear/damage even from my Man-O-War pedals. After MANY hours
hard use, the sole is not torn up at all - pretty amazing really.

I like Vans with the diamond waffle style sole. They are soft enough to grip the pedal very well, and firm enough so they don’t hurt your feet when doing drops. I just took a visit to the Vans web page. They have some new shoes. Looks like the Flattop and Jarama might be good muni shoes. I’m going to have to check those two shoes out. The Vans are low tops so you’ll need additional ankle protection with them.

The Vans Weld flat has a raised collar that covers the inside ankle by the crank. I found the design of the upper on the Weld Flat to be very uncomfortable. It bites down on the top of my toes. And the tongue is also uncomfortable. But they do have built in ankle protection. Maybe they’ll fit better on your feet than they do on mine. I think the Weld Flat has been discontinued. If you want to try them you’ll have to hunt around. I think DansComp.com might have them still in stock.

For ankle protection the AXO/661 Ankle Biter’s work well. They are comfortable to wear and protect your ankle from getting bashed by the crank.

If you want to protect your ankle from twists and sprains you’ll need to wear the Active Ankle brace (sold by unicycle.com). I find the Active Ankle’s to be uncomfortable to wear, but it sure beats twisting an ankle.

The AXO/661 Dually is also a good shoe. A good insole with a plastic arch support will make these shoes more comfortable to ride in. But for me, the Dually has less grip on the pedals than the Vans.

john_childs

Anybody else have experience with the Active Ankle brace? Does it come short of driving you crazy?

John,

I have ULTRA Flat Feet ™- if the Dually has that flat of a sole, I’ll be a happy camper (droping on to a heavy arch is like puting my foot on a rack). Are the Vans that flat, too?

Re: The perfect Muni boot / shoe

The boots that I have access to in the UK are definitely the old ones
because the new ones are not in the UK for another month or so. There are
limited sizes available but I will place an order for what ever people what
next Wednesday and lets see what I can get. I will be shipping to the US at
the end of next week (I have a load going to him then) so that if you really
want them they should be available through John Drummond; I can not say the
price yet but it will be as good as I can get it.

RE: The perfect Muni boot / shoe

Hi Christopher,

I got a set of Active Ankles a while back and rode in them quite a bit. I
hardly noticed I was wearing them apart from an occasional squeak here and
there.

I stopped wearing them when I got my 24x3 with 170mm cranks as this combo
seemed just right for one of the pivots to catch the axle when riding
backwards. Was that a painful learning experience  Since then I’ve been
riding in Duallys and the Active Ankles ain’t been quite so active any more.

Cheers
Neil

John,

I have ULTRA Flat Feet ™- if the Dually has that flat of a sole, I’ll
