The "official" Nimbus Oracle (disc brake) MUni thread

I wore the paint off my KH26 in the first ride so for me spending time and money on paint seems crazy, I am just going to strip mine and be done with it

I’ve given up on the whole idea now. Might just ride in the dark or with my eyes closed.

lol or just put it on the wall land never ride it

I do hate superfluous frame bosses though, I contemplated cutting them off my single speed bike as it looks so clean and simple so the bosses really stand out.

I would like to get my KH brake bosses chopped and a disc mount and some hose clips welded on but it is a lot of hassle for something purely aesthetic.

Do what makes you happy life would be boring if we all rode the same Uni and liked the same things

YEah, that’s why one of my munis is clear coated and the other is gold

Your best bet is to get an unpainted frame, they do exist.

I don’t like the blue either, otherwise I really like KH products.

Got my Oracle today with 137/165 cranks. This will be my main ride now. My only concern is the brake handle length that could break if it hits just right. My order was fast and correct.

I cut the end off my lever and fitted a spooner which sorted that issue out

Unlike maggies, which have an adjustment to bring the pads closer to the rim to compensate for wear, I can find no such adjustment for the Oracle’s [bengal] disc brake. Only adjustment I could find is a small screw in the lever but that only changes the lever’s up/down position. It doesn’t move the pads closer to the disc. If there is such an adjustment, please let me know. Thanks!
(I skimmed this thread to see if someone might have brought this up, but didn’t see it, so I apologize if I missed it.)

Typically disk brakes auto-adjust for wear so require no such adjustment screw.
This does mean you can’t chose how far away you want your pads for personal preference of bite distance but that’s how most of them are now.

Yes, I had assumed they would “auto-adjust” as they wear, but my Oregon has much more lever travel (space between pads and disc) then my Oracle, (due to much more use) yet both unis have the same brake. I do remember the Oregon had very little play when I first got it, but with all the riding and brake use, there is now a lot more space between the pads and disc, so apparently it’s not auto-adjusting.

The Bengal brake is sensitive to heat exposure, so try to avoid leaving it in a hot car. I noticed that mine would be extremely soft when it was hot, then firm up as it cooled off. If you have excess lever travel all the time, then you may need to bleed the brake. I suppose it’s possible you have worn out your pads, so check those first.

The Bengal brakes are self adjusting. There is a spring loaded gland in the reservoir that does this. I have not noticed the handle position changing with wear. I guess some varience could easily happen as it relies on the gland pressure and with inconsitancies in the pad wear. Tempeture vaiences you notice should be corrected with a couple of pumps of the brake handle.

On the Grectia challenge we had a problem with Joe’s brake on the second day that turned out not be self adjusting. It gradually crept closer and closer to the saddle until it did not stop the uni at all. It was only then that we had a good look at it and realised what the problem was and then found we didn’t have the right allen key with us! It believe it was an Avid brake. I also know that some of the Shimano ones are the same.

New Nimbus “Ride & Review” video:

Fiesty’s post was a huge help

Feisty, I’ve used up my Google quota trying to find an explanation that you laid out above. It’s not bad enough that we have to deal with different mount types (post vs IS), but we also need to be cognizant that these brakes are really for MTN bikes, and when they say Front/Rear, they are referring to the wheel, not the side of the fork.

I also got the terms POST and front mixed up (thinking post mount meant behind the fork, vs front being in front of the fork).

Also, I finally gained some awareness of the 20mm delta but I had NO IDEA it was related to the rear brakes requiring different offsets.

Really good post… but might only be appreciated by someone who is pulling his hair out trying to reconcile all of these terms and standards.

No use in starting a new thread so i’ll post my question here. I am getting a disc brake for my 29" muni and was considering the avid elixir 3, does anyone have experience with this brake or any say on how it would perform?

Thanks

The rim on my 26" Nimbus Oracle is 42mm wide Dominator 2, 36H, ERD 492mm. I want a road slick tire to lower urban rolling resistance. Is my rim too wide for something like the Maxxis Hookworm or Schwalbe Big Apple? I don’t want the tire to pop off the rim.

Has anyone tried a Maxxis DTH 26X2.30 grooved-slick urban option?

Hookworm 26x2.5 get one! It will fit

+1 on the hookworm. They are awesome!

I have had my 26" hookworm on my 65mm wide Large Marge rim. It can handle 42mm.

I ride one 90% of the time and it ROCKS! one of the best tires ever

anyone know the max tire width that can be used on the 26" oracle?
If it has been mentioned already, sorry.
