Welcome to the music thread.
The basic idea here is one place to discuss absolutley anything and everything about music, any kind/style whatever. Recommend good music, request music (to download or whatever), talk about favourite songs, bands, genres, anything goes aslong as its about music! I think you get the idea. I know there are other threads about music, but this is one place to discuss it. So get talkin’
Okay I may aswell lead my example and get this thread going.
Where is a good place, online, to download music (for free obvously) with a wide range of music etc?
I know Alta Vista is quite good…but is there anywhere else people know of?
I’ve recently become addicted to good ol’ Reggae, thanks to my father(big hippie). I listen to Bob Marley, sure but theres soooo much more.
My top 3 Reggae Groups/Artists:
- Jimmy Cliff
- Bob Marley
- Burning Spear
Top 3 Reggae songs:
- Kinky Reggae - Bob Marley
- Jimmy Cliff - The Harder They Come
- Burning Reggae - Burning Spear
Actually, my dad introduces me to alot of great music. He used to be in the record buisiness or something, having a collection of over 12,000 records.
Online? Just search google like so:
“Band Name” mp3
Exactly like that. I’d really reccomend DL’ing some sort of P2P rogram, but if you still have that bad compy, you might be better off just DL’ing from the net.
Thanks for that Catboy. Say you seem to have a pretty similar taste in music to me…what are some of your other favourites I probably haven’t heard of, and you would recommend?
Favorites… in music???
That could take an hour of typing.
Ill just slowly list my favorite 3 of a ton of stuff.
Favorite 3 Bassists:
- Jaco Pastorius(greatest bass player ever)
- Stanley Clarke
- Victor Wooten
Check’em all out.
Stanly Clarke was in the group Weather Report, and with Al Di Miola, so their stuff is him. But Jaco and Victor did a TON of solo stuff, and in my opinion the best of their playing.
I reccomend the following composers;
- J. S. Bach.
- Felix Mendelssohn
- Jean Sibelius
- Dmitri Shostakovitch
- Aram Khachaturian
- Peter Tschaikovsky
- Ralph Vaughan Williams
- Karl Maria von Weber
Listen to lots of Concertos and Symphonies- those are usually their best works.
Re: The Music Thread!
would the whatever be walking to your local record store and supporting your favorite bands?
never heard of him… is he american?
I hope it was sarcasm… and I think it is. But for those who don’t know who Bach is:
Johann Sebastian Bach, the most renowned member of a distinguished family of German musicians and composers, is considered one of the greatest composers in history. A virtuoso organist who was famous throughout Germany during his career, Bach served as court musician and composer in Arnstadt, Weimar, Köthen and finally as cantor and director of music at Leipzig (1723-50). His most famous works include The Brandenberg Concertos, Well-Tempered Clavier and Art of the Fugue. Bach’s fame during his lifetime was due to his ability as an organist more than his reputation as a composer, but since the 19th century he has been hailed as a genius whose work represents the peak of the Baroque era.
Alright! A favorite classical composer list. I also like classical music. Some of my favorites (in no particular order) are:
J. S. Bach - organ music
Dmitri Shostakovich - symphonies
Ludwig Van Beethoven - symphonies
Sergey Rachmaninov - piano concertos
Johannes Brahms - symphonies, Hungarian Dances
Antonin Dvorak - symphonies, Slavonic Dances
Carl Nielsen - symphonies
Jean Sibelius - symphonies
David Diamond - symphonies
Peter Tchaikovsky - symphonies and others
Carl Orff - Carmina Burana
Gustav Holst - The Planets
Modest Moussorgsky - Pictures At An Exhibition
Vaughan Williams - Sinfonia Antartica
And there are others in my collection, but those are the ones I’m most likely to pull out first if I’m just looking for something to play. I do like the Schostakovich symphonies. There’s a bunch of them that I have more than one version of. When I was living in Portland OR the Portland Symphony was playing a lot of Schostakovich so I got to hear several of his symphonies live. That was a treat.
You’ve got Aram Khachaturian on your list. I know I’ve heard some of his works, but I don’t have any in my collection. I’ll have to put him on my need to get list. What pieces should I get?
And right now I’m listening to Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5. It’s been a while since I’ve listened to it.
Reggae and classical are two areas of music where my cd collection is pretty sparse, but ill list some favourites anyway:
Top 3 reggae songs:
- Conroy Smith- Dangerous
- Eek-a-mouse- Ganja Smuggling
- Damian Marley- It Was Written
- just about every Bob Marley song ive ever heard:)
Top 2 classical (the only ones i really listen to):
- Orff- Carmina Burana
- Handel (i think)- Zadok the Priest
Have you guys seen the lyrics to Carmina Burana?
Apparently they are based on some 12th century German poems or something and they are pretty crazy, I think the poets must have been on the absinthe!
Some of my favorite guitar players -
Steve Howe
Al DiMeola
Larry Carlton
Lee Ritenour
Stanley Jordan
I like the Gaithers and also the Newsboys. Has anyone on here heard of either group?
nope.
What kind of music do they play?
It’s Contemporary Christian and the other group is Southern Gospel. Michael W. Smith is another artist that I enjoy hearing.
I like the barking Christmas dogs. Genius. Pure genius.
I’ve heard of the Newsboys, and have a couple of their songs on my computer. they’re perdy good.
I don’t know who wrote it, but Bill Monroe and Earl Scruggs both did a song called:
Jimmy Brown, The Newsboy
I sell the morning papers sir,
My name is jimmy brown
Everybody knows that I’m a newsboy of the town
You will hear me yelling morning star
As I run along the street
I have no hat upon my head,
No shoes upon my feet
Never mind sir how I look
Don’t look at me and frown
I sell the morning papers sir
My name is jimmy brown
I’m awful cold and hungry sir
My clothes are torn and thin
I wander 'bout from place to place
My daily bread to win
My father died a drunkard sir
I’ve heard my mother say
I’m helping mother sir
As i journey on my way
My mother always tells me sir
There’s nothing in the world to lose
I’ll get a place in heaven sir
To sell the gospel news
I’m working from memory here, but Carl Orff was a composer who did not flee Germany during the Nazi rule. If I recall correctly, Hitler was a fan of Carmina Burana.
