The Music Thread

I used the search bar but didn’t find anything. What kind of music are you guys/gals into? Play any instruments?

My favorite bands are Modest Mouse, Neutral Milk Hotel, The Music Tapes, Lync, Primus, Tom Waits, HIM, but recently I’ve been listening to a lot of breakbeat/ Drum and Bass stuff ( Venetian Snares, Aphex Twin, Acrynm, Squarepusher, Stunt Rock)

I play the guitar, bass, banjo, the saw, the slide whistle, the ocarina, the jaw harp, and i can play the piano and the drums but i don’t own any.

My musical taste is all over the place

there is a “what instruments do you play” thread started by some genius on this site.

Hmmmmm. I guess “music” was too basic xD

I like:

Mindless Self Indulgence(MSI), The Agonist, Johnny Cash, Dead Kennedys, The Clash, The Strokes, Escape The Fate (With Ronnie, not the new guy), System of a Down, Serj Tankian, Godsmack, Avenged Sevenfold, iwrestledabearonce, and some others.

My taste is mostly classic punk (New punk is terrible… Except MSI), hard-rock, metal, some screamo, and MSI is just something completely different.

I like Acid Mothers Temple, Acid King, Boris, Electric Wizard, Sleep, Nasum, Pig Destroyer, White Mice, Lightning Bolt, Boredoms, Bass Communion, Mossuraya, Realicide, Ove-Naxx, Venetion Snares, Can, Hurdy Gurdy, Leaf Hound, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Yura Yura Teikoku, Phobia, Mum, Niwa, Midori, Witchcraft, Hagnreithur Groendal, Hanatarash, OOIOO, Baikonour.
Ummm… Thats about all I can think of off the top of my head.

Ooh, a list thread.

I play anglo concertina and harmonica, and very occasionally melodeon. I also sing a bit.

Music collection ranges from English folk through blues, country, rock and roll to punk, miscellaneous rock/metal and a bit of classical.

Agreed. It doesn’t even come close to what it used to be. So many people label bands as “punk” when they have no idea what it was, and that pisses me off. I also hate how people think it’s a fad now. You ain’t hardcore when you spike your hair. I’m also big into the DKs as well :stuck_out_tongue:

I listen to what I think is punk, but I’m not sure. I don’t care much, since I listen to it because I think it sounds great, not because it is punk, but you got me interested because it might be the terrible new punk.
The bands I listen to are mostly Rancid, NOFX, Mad Caddies, Millencolin, Me first and the gimme gimmes, green day, homegrown, lagwagon, the Hives, The Offspring, Alien Ant Farm, Goldfinger, Flogging Molly and Bad Religion. Do you know any of them/is that terrible punk? I never knew there was any difference, but it’s kinda obvious now. :stuck_out_tongue:

I started playing guitars during this summer, so I’m not anywhere near good yet, but I like sitting and fiddling with it.

Oh, and what is MSI?

mindless self indulgence

sounds painful. :astonished:

Dropkick Murphys is mt favorite

i like HIM. Theyre good.

very good

I like Radiohead, Gorillaz, Coldplay, Beck, Muse, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Smashing Pumpkins, Weezer, R.E.M., Jimmy Eat World, Foo Fighters, The Fray, and a whole bunch of other alternative artists.

i agree. especially with the gorillaz, you never know what youre gonna get.

Of all the punk music in my collection, Anti-Nowhere League are head and shoulders above the rest. Most of the others are middle class kids having a fake tantrum about some half understood simplistic politics.

I play the piano and the guitar.

I like Jimmy Buffett, Toby Keith, Credence Clearwater Revival, Alan Jackson, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline, The Ventures, Santana, The Zack Brown Band, Reba McEntire, John Fogerty, Hank Williams Jr., Chicago, Sugarland, Asleep At The Wheel, Mumbo Gumbo, Bob Marley, The Eagles, Jerry Jeff Walker, Kenny Chesney, and Brooks & Dunn.

I stopped reading posts after the first mention of MSI, fearing that there would just be a continuance of appreciation for internet popularized garbage, even though I don’t think it could get much worse.

I play many instruments, most of which are organs, keyboards and EIDs/MIDI controllers. I also have 4 gameboys with various cart synths(LSDJ, KorgDS, Pixelh8, etc.) for fun. I’m a fairly accomplished singer and currently taking lessons to be able to accompany myself on the piano. My brother and I perform our own compostions as well as DJ at venues in the area. We record and produce with Ableton8 and ProTools both of which are M-Powered by my 2496Audiophile.

My music collection is currently 42,644 items deep totaling 121 days 20 hours 41 minutes and 21 seconds of audio(not including original compositions and raw audio), a whopping 255.88GB! Thank goodness external Terabytes have become so cheap!

Lately I’ve been into a lot of the electronic music coming out of France like Justice, Busy P, DJ Mehdi, Cassius, Mr Oizo, Breakbot and the rest of the artists on the Daft Punk sponsored Ed Banger label. Speaking of Daft Punk, they’re definitely the greatest musicians of our time by my standards, and oh so underappreciated and underrecognized. If you don’t know who they are or don’t like their music do me a favor and kill yourself and die. Justice makes me bust a nut.

Come stateside and I still like some electronic artists but very few. The Bloody Beetroots, Boyz Noize and MSTRKRFT are cool but us yanks seem to do the downtempo a little better… maybe were just a little slower. MGMT is cool and I even liked their new album “Congratulations” even though it recieved criticism and the band was forced(by Sony, their label) to issue a public apology for not having any single material on it. We’ve also got some good folk music coming out of the good ol’ US of A, stuff like Joanna Newsom keeps me from thinking that Americans have a predisposition for being musically inept. But who am I kidding? Most of the good stuff is coming from across the pond.

M83 is amazing stuff and I’ve been loving everything they put out for years now, they just keep getting better and better. Listen to them and if you don’t like it you just don’t get it.
The XX is another great group based out of London, they’re relatively new and totally kick ass.

You probably haven’t heard of iamamiwhoami, this girl(who is actually Jonna Lee) who has been slowly releasing music videos on youtube anonymously without any label or hype. She’s like a downtempo Lady Gaga without all the bullshit. You also probably havent heard of Toro y Moi an american singer/songwriter putting out some really good stuff too. Both are tres chouette.

I’ve just realized that I could keep typing about awesome new musicians that people should listen to but that would take forever so I’ll just list some of my other fav’s off the top of my head:

Danger, Data, Empire of the Sun, Van She, Crystal Castles, Silversun Pickups, Ratatat, Anoraak, Neon Neon, Pony Pony Run Run, Wake me up for Bro!!, Royksopp, Sebastian Tellier, Kavinsky, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Shiny Toy Guns, The Toxic Avenger, Wu Tang Clan, Beastie Boys, Etienne de Crecy, Justin Timberlake, Le Tigre, Ladytron, Miami Horror, Uffie, Lil Wayne, Radiohead, Sublime, ZAO, Mac Dre, team9, Stereogum, Weezer, Yelle, Camille, AIr, The Beatles, Bjork, The Game, The Knife, Sabrepulse, Nullsleep, Amari, AFX, Basement Jaxx, The Books, CFCF, Classixx, College, Erland Oye, Phoenix, Feist, HEALTH, Hot Chip, Marina and the Diamonds… to name just a teeny tiny few.

Anyone else pick up the new Iron Maiden album: “The Final Frontier” yesterday when it dropped? It totally kicks ass. I work with a guy who is the biggest IM nut, he’s covered from head to toe in Maiden tattoos and yesterday he was wearing the album release shirt and had 3 copies of the album on him. :stuck_out_tongue:

Wow. Thats hard core. :astonished:
