The Gates in Central Park

The Gates in Central Park has been getting a lot of news attention. Every time I see them I wonder if any part of The Gates is in an area of Central Park where you could ride a unicycle through some of the gates. Anyone in NYC know? If you can, has anyone done it yet?

Riding through some of the gates on a Coker at a good speed would be fun as long as the gates didn’t hang too low.

Re: The Gates in Central Park

The whole thing looks like an open invitation to me. Have to be able to ride through that. It’s public. Cool art too…those two have always been operating on a huge scale. The Valley Curtain is one of my favorites.

Hope you NYC riders max out on the opportunity, and become part of the piece. Wish I could join.

I happened to be at the gates last weekend with a friend. He on his Coker and me on my 5’ giraffe. We were able to ride on the bike road, but there was tons of people walking, riding, rollerblading. As for riding “through” the gates? They are built over the walkways in the park, so yes you could ride through. The day I was there, the first day, it was way too crowded to venture down those small walkways. You can see a little of what I’m talking about in the attached picture.

Had a great ride, though a little chilly.

By the way, does my avatar look familiar?

another shot, I would have to duck to ride through.

doesnt the fabric move so that it would just brush off your head? or is it like attached to the post all the way around?

That’s cool! I wasn’t sure if the individual gates were on paths that were off-limits to bikes/unicycles or not. I’ve never been to Central Park and I don’t know the rules with regards to bikes/unicycles there.

It looks like a Coker rider would fit under the gates just fine. That would be fun. A wave of orange rushing just inches over your head as you speed along the path.

It moves. It’s hangs like a shower curtain. I guess it would just brush over, but you wouldn’t be able to see the next Gate coming up.
