the Experimental Music thread

Soooo… who likes it? This thread is to talk about weird music, share videos and stuff…
I’ve been playing free-jazz and experimental piano, vocals and trumpet for around 7-8 years and it’s pretty much what I want to do with my life. I have the honor of playing with one of the most amazing musicians alive. He was one of the first free-jazz players, back when you could get jumped for playing avant-jazz. He’s played with Anthony Braxton, Rassan Roland Kirk and people like that. He’s amazing…
Anyway, here’s some videos I really love…

Art Ensemble of Chicago with Cecil Taylor

Anthony Braxton Quartet

Sleepytime Gorilla Museum- Widening Eye

Sleepytime- Freedom Club

Currently my favorite artists are Cecil Taylor, Anthony Braxton, Ornette Coleman, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Faun Fables and Mr. Bungle…

Discuss… and please don’t say this isn’t music… just pleeeease don’t…

I’m sorry, I gave STGM a solid try, but I just cannot find it pleasurable. To each his own.

I remember when in some class a while back we were made to listen to some experimental music. That was before I was my own person, so I hated it because everyone else did. In actuality, I found it very intriguing and wanted to learn and hear more. Kind of forgot about it, I guess.

I’d listen to your examples, but the computer I use for the summer doesn’t have sound. Sigh…

I remember thinking experimental music was in a similar category to abstract art. You really just need to let go to what your conception of art (or music) is.

In my opinion, it’s not so much letting go of what you think music is, but seeing and interpereting it in a new way.
In time, it will become old school. Gustav Mahler and Claude Debussey (sp) used to be considered very avant-garde…

I suggest fans of chiptunes and/or hip-hop take a short peek at Supercommuter, a new project of whom Optimus Rhyme’s Wheelie Cyberman is a key playa.

CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?

I LIKE TANGERINE DREAM. IT’S NOT EXPERIMENTAL, BUT SOME OF THEIR STUFF IS WAY OUT THERE. SOME OF THEIR SONGS TAKE FIVE MINUTES BEFORE THEY EVEN RESEMBLE AN ACTUAL SONG. I THOUGHT IT WOULD HAVE PREPARED ME FOR CLICKING THOSE LINKS. I WAS WRONG.

IT’S INTERESTING STUFF. WHAT I CAN’T FIGURE OUT IS WHERE I’VE HEARD THAT SORT OF MUSIC BEFORE. LIVE, TOO. IT MAY HAVE BEEN A STUDENT RECITAL AT A COLLEGE LONG, LONG AGO.

aaa

ever heard the song i want to be a hippie? watch the music video, it is WEIRD!!!

Not many people have heard of Tangerine Dream. I’ve got three of their records. Goats’s experimental music is too experimental for me. But with music, it’s to each his own.

You know what I like, Jackie.

Oh yeah.

The Baldwin Piano Company has asked me to announce that this is a Steinway.

The lead singer, Mike Patton, has been in about 430 bands over they years.

Faith No More
Peeping Tom
Mike Patton Solo
Fantomas
Tomahawk
etc. etc.

Just to name a few. If you like bungle check out his other stuff.
You will be pleasently suprised.

edit: I am just watching the sleepy time gorlla museum and its wayyy tight!!!
Thanks for sharing

Chase

Yeah, I started out listening to Faith no More and then got into his other stuff. I havn’t Peeping Tom yet, though… He’s so awesome though. Whatever he’s on, I want some!
SGM is great. I kinda know the lead singer/guitarist. He’s such a sweet guy.
If you like them, check out these vids as well.
Hymn to the Morning Star
Helpless Corpses Enactment
Live in New York

And as usual, The Man arrives with a sense of style.

Eish John, that’s worth a beer.

I like this sort of stuff. I’ve been listening to a bit of Medeski Martin and Wood lately, I guess it’s more jazz than anything else but its sort of similar.

i really like krautrock: Can, Faust, Neu!, Kraftwerk. Some of those, like Can, for instance, are more experimental than others…primarily because they were channeling the aura of stockhausen’s music/sounds.

I like what I own, and have heard of Brian Eno’s, and of his involvement with other artists. I would consider his work to be fairly experimental.

Speaking of Ornette Coleman, I like Captain Beefheart, and am a big fan of his ‘Trout Mask Replica’ and ‘Lick My Decals Off Baby’ LP’s. His music has a weird freejazz meets howlin’ wolf blues meets dadaism sound to it. Not for everybody.

Later period John Coltrane is very experimental. Again: Not for everybody. I recently picked up ‘Ascension’ and ‘A Love Supreme.’

I find Steve Reich and Philip Glass to be interesting…Admittedly, I haven’t heard much from either fellow.

I’m not sure if this counts as experimental music, but I think it does. I like The Shizit. Dan Heaton actually got me into them.

Circa Survive

Amazing band. My favorite vocalist Anthony Green
is their lead singer.

Here is a great video:

I wouldnt class the last two posts above me to be expiremental. After listening to both bands, they sounded a lot like a lot of the mainstream sounds out right now, and nothing really different or steping out of the box.

Here it comes…

Back in the day, Pink Floyds’, Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here albums were considered to be on the X-piremental side. Dark Side was produced by Alan Parsons, who also produced the Abbey Road Album. Alan Parsons went on to become the Alan Parsons Project Band that mades some very fine music. You may have heard a few of the more famous cuts off all of the for-mentioned but you owe it to yourself to listen to the entire album/Disc. Some of the best stuff didn’t make the top 40 play list. That was some cutting edge music for their time. They are still GREAT tunes even now.

Here is a U-Tube of Breathe, Give it a listen, phenominal stuff (7 mins long)

Make sure you listen to the ENTIRE cut… Great Stuff

Omg…Wish You Were Here is one of my absolute favorite songs/albums everrr.

Breathe, the one you linked to, is good too.
