The Durian thread

So with the brocoli and brussel sprout threads and all i thought i would make a durian thread. mmmmmmmm… durian. yummy. i think that durian is my favorite food ever!! i like it best right before it starts to rot when the fruit is all creamy. so who here likes durian and how so you like it?

I like how it’s against the law to bring them on the subway in Singapore! In the place I was working when I was there (in late '94), there was a Durian cafe. They sold various things made with durian, including a dessert that was pretty tasty! You just have to ignore the smell…

Durians were like a “joke fruit” in Singapore. Enough so that we considered doing some durian pass-juggling in the shows we were performing. We never got around to it because we would have had to buy two pairs of tough gloves (imagine juggling pineapples)…

I’ve never heard of Durian … but the fact that it’s both creamy and spikey does rise some suspitions

that’s crazy! They also have “Durian free” neighborhoods and i think that it’s illegal to take them to parks. I pesonally love the smell!!

Durian. yummmm…

Hm, ive never had one but I love to try different exotic foods.

two stories about durian:

  • a friend of mine owns a software house and sold software to a bank in Taiwan. They went there with a team to sign a contract … and in the end the local people offered Durian.
the “techs” politely declined but the “suits” (e.g. the managers) felt obliged to comply… then my friend’s associate barfed everything in front of everybody!

  • another of my friend is a pilot for freight. once he loaded a planefull of Durian, though it was in the cargo he could not get rid of the smell and the plane kept smelling for such a long time :astonished:

I could have sworn the Durian were a race of aliens in Star Trek.

“Captain! Durian ship off the starboard bow!”

It is sometimes called the “Heaven and Hell” fruit. So called because it tastes like Heaven, and smells like…
You can buy them in most Chinatowns in the UK.

They are certainly banned on international flights, not sure about local flights. They would be a little heavy for passing between jugglers, not to mention extremely uncomfortable to catch.

A guy I know left half of one in a cupboard at his company the week he left. Had he not left his resultant unpopularity would have been made known to him.

In HK I had Durian flavoured ice cream once.

NO WAY AS IF I’M NOT THE ONLY ONE!!! Durians are freaking awesome, although they do kinda smell like kitty litter. I love durians, they are much good.

Although I must admit I have never eaten durian straight as the fruit, always as bubble tea or shakes.

Bubble tea is the shizzly wizzly fo fizzly kizly mo mizly except the tapioca balls look like fish eggs

They’re much better by themselfs.
I can’t figure out why people don’t like the smell though.

Never tried them but heard they are horrible. Can you get them in the U.S. is so where. I would like to try one sometime if I ever could. Also as long as they don’t smell like mold or bad cat littler I am okay. I just barfed early today because of some mold it was gross! Yet I had to have another sniff it was so gross it was beautiful…

welll… to some people they are awfull yet to others they are the most delicious fruit in the world. most people think that they smell bad tho… you can get them at most chinatown markets in the usa.

Uhm no it’s not illegal to take them to parks and there aren’t any durian-free neighborhoods.

Durians are great. I like them with a hint of bitter. The really sweet, watery ones taste kinda bad.

Oh, shows how much i know about singapore :o

Every site and picture I’ve seen about durian makes it look nasty.

Me and a bunch of friends bought packaged durian at a World Market nearby and all dove in.

I gotta say, as bad as the smell was/made me gag at the beginning, you get used to it. But…oh my god, the taste…it felt like eating a mouthful of rotten onions. I barely stomached a spoonful.

That’s why we didn’t end up doing it; cost of two pairs of work gloves (plus finding them), plus cost of lots of durians as I’m not sure how long they would have lasted between drops and rottage. Our stint in Singapore was for 23 days. Plus there was the question of a dropped one bouncing into the audience, which wouldn’t be very polite…

Forgot to mention earlier that I have a wooden durian. Got it in Bali, where we were doing a show a few months later. In Bali (and most of Indonesia?) you can find nearly anything carved out of wood, and often beautifully painted. I also got a “Bart Simpson on a giraffe unicycle” carved of wood. Unlicensed, I’m sure. Got to take a picture of that if I don’t already have one…

Durians are the the best fruit ever!

In fact, when I was a kid, there is absolutely nothing I loved more than Durian.

I love the smell too. It doesn’t smell anything like vomit. I think people who thinks it does must have different olfactory receptors to the people who love Durian.
