The comfortable ride

First, I would like to thank all the people who have been posting photos of the NAUCC events. Please keep them coming, it’s really great!

Jason’s observations:

a) The 40+ year old guys who posted and said an air saddle was a ‘must’ were absolutely correct! I should have just bought my Uni with the air saddle from the start. Doh! Newbies take a note.

b) The guys who said, “watch out, you’ll start with one Uni and end up with ten” were also wise. My family started riding two months ago and we now own 3 Unicycles. I am trying to get my wife involved and that would make four! Does it ever stop?

I got my new air saddle from unicycle.com yesterday. Wow, what a difference! I’m still messing with the air pressure. I started with a small amount of air and then pumped it up a bit, but then let some air out and will give that a go this evening.

I’m not sure if the air saddle is the cause of this, but my Uni seems to be more responsive to turns and I tend to over turn and over correct a bit now. I think it’s from the air saddle shifting under my butt? I guess I just have to get used to it? I have only ridden 2 times in the last week :frowning: but now that I have the air saddle I will start my daily rides again. Yesterday, I took the opportunity to try rolling over every dip, crack and bump that I could find in the road. It seems a lot easier to roll over those obstacles with the air saddle. This weekend I will attempt my very first MUni ride! There’s a nicely packed trail to a lake near my home. I guess I’ll just armor up and start pedaling- test my metal so to speak.

The best news of all is that my son’s new Uni arrived yesterday. A red 16" model. It was poring down rain, so I haven’t told him about it yet. I didn’t want him to have a new Uni and not be able to try it out. Today the weather is better and I should be able to get him started. Wish me luck, it should be hoot! I think he has the drive and motivation, but time will tell.

I’ve quoted two of your paragraphs, and it’s inevitable: you have to
post photo’s of your son riding (well, learning to ride at first).
It’s not so often that 5 year olds unicycle, so it might be
inspirational to other young kids and their parents. Good luck to him

  • and you.

Klaas,

Thank you. I will be sure to post photo’s. I will also try and post a
short diary of his progress as well.

Re: The comfortable ride

Jason,
good luck on your son’s uni career - keep us posted for sure.

Glad you are finding your air seat so luxurious! I have a Semcycle seat and
find it really comfortable as well and can’t believe it has survived so much
abuse while I was learning to ride.

And hey, if your wife is a little interested in riding and would like some
pointers from a couple of other women who have just learned to ride tell her
to shoot us an e-mail.

Have fun on your first Muni ride. I am pretty keen on the Muni idea too and
have been experimenting with different, albeit pretty tame, off road
terrain.

Cheers,
Erin

Jason,
You are correct about the air seat changing the reaction of the uni. You wind up with a small, but noticeable time delay in the transmission of your body movements since you are sitting on a cushion of air (which allows additional movement) rather than being in direct contact with the seat. You will notice the same thing with a gel seat cover. But with a little adjustment time, it shouldn’t be a problem. Good luck.
Unibiker

after making my own airseat, i found i was pacing waaay more weight on the saddle as opposed to the pedals
could this also partly explain jason’s experience regarding response time?

my girlfriend is not at all interested in learning how to uni
anything i could slip into her coffee?
