The Chicken or the Egg?

Which came first? Your own unicycle, or your ability to ride a unicycle?
-David Kaplan

The chicken. The egg came three days later.

I’m in the same roost as Harper.

I spent three weeks on my friends 20inch cyclepro, then i got my very own unicycle.

The Egg. Me and my old man bought my first unicycle about 4 years ago, and
then I learned how to ride.

I learned on a 20" Schwinn my dad borrowed from a colleague at work. I got a 20" Cyclepro (the one Dan learned on, in fact) the Christmas after that.

Chicken came first for me. Borrowed one from this kid in middle school, I learned how to ride across the stage for the show. The kid took his unicycle back and that was the end of my fun, until 5 years later.

Egg–X-mas present from Grandparents. It was sort of a “joke” on my X-mas list, but when I got it I figured I might as well learn how to ride it.

I’ve never been the same since.

My own unicycle. A National (Japanese) with orange seat. I can’t
remember what color the uni was. It might have been orange too.

Re: The chicken or the egg?

I’m still falling off the chicken.

Re: The Chicken or the Egg?

I had the unicycle before I learnt to ride it. Only bought it cause someone
asked why I didnt already have one. Thought I would be able to jump straight
on, but not bloody likely!

took another 2 hours or so before I could ride more than 10 meters…

I’m just like Will. Since I don’t know of anyone who already had a unicycle, my only hope of ever learning was to buy one first. It is turning out to be a much longer process than I originally expected, partly because of my age and being a very cautious rider, and partly because of a lack of practice time. I am not going to give up though. I know it is possible, thanks to many other people here who have posted their stories. I will get it eventually, no matter how long it takes!

I definitely already knew how to ride before I bought my first; a Schwinn
Giraffe.

I bought my first uni (a norco) about 15 years ago. Played with it for a week and put it away for apx. 14 yrs. (ok it went missing for about 10…brothers)

Re: The Chicken or the Egg?

I joined a unicycle club in September (2000), acquired SOME ability to
ride, bought my Semcycle in November of the same year.

To add two more cases to the statistics: my daughter Minke did the
same (incl timing). But Jorga did it the other way round: she got the
uni for her birthday (Jan 2000) then learned to ride on it.

My unicycle. Got it this weekend, haven’t done a thing with it yet. No
nuts.

Wait. I mean, Coker didn’t send nuts to attach the seat with, not…

Aargh.

P.S. Egg.

By the way, I got my egg first. A 20’" semcycle XL. And It has become my taxi cab, now affectionately to be known as my egg.

Re: The Chicken or the Egg?

OK, Kaplan. This is your original post. The saying is, “which came first, the chicken or the egg?” If the sequence is to be consistent I am afraid you are misinforming people that the chicken corresponds to your ability to ride a unicycle.

Bring it on, Kaplan…I’m ready for you.

as a member of the ‘balls-up’ juggling club in johannesburg, i’ve been around unicyclists for a while
took a nasty off-the-back-now-where’s-my-coccyx-kinda fall off a 24’ and thought i’d rather go for seven balls
i did have a lot of fun walking into cycling shops asking for uni’s
the enjoyment comes from the blank looks on the faces of ppl who run bussinesses and drive cars, but cant figure out what a unicycle is
one day a guy said yes
i felt honorbound to buy the thing and then figured i might as well learn to ride it as my quest to juggle seven balls got sideswiped by a mysterious muscle injury high-up in my right bicep
it bothers me after about two weeks of regular training with five balls as well so i think my juggling exploits r becoming rather limited
i still ride my 20’ and occasionally the 24 i bought
i have no idea what makes these things r and u lot will probably laugh when u see them
with our currency trading at about 1:12 to the dollar, it will be a while before i import anything
now u know
