The Budget

Well we get a load of US political thread on here so why not?

What do people think? is dropping mid-band income tax to 20p (from 22p) and axing the low band 10p tax just a way of getting ‘income tax cut’ in the headlines without actually lowering taxes? Surely this just taxes people who earn ings are mostly covered by the old 10p tax, whereas those earning £26k plus are pretty much unaffected? Discuss.

I don’t know about headline grabbing but Brown knows who votes.
Pensioners. The over 65s will be exempt.
Middle-Englanders, those on the £20k - £40k income will see the biggest benefits.

An estimated 20% of households could be unaffected or worse off for the change, but 40% of the electorate don’t bother to vote.

Those in the lower paid bracket (under £18k) and not eligible for tax credits are the most likely to be worse off. That’s me that is.

Perhaps it’s a subtle way to combat voter apathy and coax the late-teens and twentysomethings into the ballot box when they find out they’ve been shafted.

bah i tend to think it matters very little. personally taxes (which for the first time i will pay start of august) i think are only fair. People with higher wages pay more taxes people with less pay less, now how much less is an endless debate but in the end everyone wins and looses every year or so.
