Thanks for the advice guys! I’m happy with stalling now, and I’ve started to build up the confidence to just pedal backwards while I’m at it. The physics of it don’t make sense - but then again, they didn’t make sense when I was learning to ride in the first place so I’m sure it’ll come to me with enough practice!
I’d love to have a go on a giraffe - this sums up perfectly how I always thought riding one would make me feel! But I’m not quite there just yet…
Heavy rain over the last few days left the local trail muddy, so I rode a muddy trail for the first time today. Slipping sideways and some wheel-spin made for a fun ride. I only fell off a couple more times than normal. What a hoot.
Fell off a few times trying to do some tight turns on the icy bits, sliding around is so much fun though. I also discovered the “unicycle wheelspin” for the first time, now that is awesome!
Today I learned how to properly dismount with uni in front. For whatever reason I initially learned to dismount with uni in the back, and it’s been hard to unlearn. I think I’ve got it now.
Oh and I did my first ever hop today. I think maybe an inch off the ground.
I sprained my ankle last week riding on a trail, and I need to take a few days off for it to heal
Today I decided to give juggling a try while riding. It sure gave my brain a run for its money, it wasn’t sure what to do… I ended up being able to do about 30 catches with my bean bags after 20 minutes of trying. Its really hard to watch were your going!
Well I got a Nimbus Trials Uni for Christmas (several family members and myself chipped in since it’s fairly expensive). I’ve not attempted hopping until now because I would have torn up my Torker 20". So tonight was night #2 for basic hopping. After struggling a bit I was able to hop in a circle and hop over a 2x4. Sweet!
It sure is different going from a Torker CX to a Nimbus Trials. That big knobby tire takes some work to ride around! I have adapted to it though and have ridden my entire repertoir of skills on it. After getting used to the Nimbus, the Torker seems effortless to ride. I go back and forth between them and the Torker feels like I’m floating around, its so smooth and light compared to the Trials. Don’t get me wrong, the Nimbus is one fine machine! I love it.
Today I managed to hop up a kerb for the first time ever. It’s so amazing - like when I first learned to hop down, now I have a new-found sense of freedom!
Did 10 1 revolution idles with my hands behind my back
Rode backwards 5 revolutions with my hands behind my back
Rode one-legged 50 revolutions (right)
Rode one-legged 1 revolution (left)
Nice job on the 1 footed riding! I’ve been toying with it a bit and just can not seem to take my foot off the pedal. I can get to where my foot is barely touching it, but my mind won’t let me take it off
Thanks! It probably took me about 8 weeks to get the right foot down devoting 10-15 minutes a day to it and now I can ride for as long as I can go straight (still need work on turning). But I’m a slow learner! I also wasted some time practicing too long with my foot not on the frame.
Are you trying on your 20" or your 24"? I found the 20" much easier because bails/UPDs are so mild compared to the 24". Most of the time I just step or fall over onto my feet (although there have been a few tumbles to the ground). I just started with my left leg this week and it’s back to the drawing board.
I’m also working up to riding backwards while juggling. I find that this is much more difficult compared to riding forwards while juggling. I figure it will take me another month or so to get it down. This is why I’m doing the hands-behind-back practice, although I find that it’s fun on its own.
Sweet! I tried the other day for the first time and it seemed impossible, but then again most of the unicycling things I try for the first time seem impossible. Good job SuperG.
