The 46 Best-ever Freeware Utilities

Here’s a list of more than 46 good freeware programs and utilities for Windows. There’s some good stuff in there.

At first I was bummed out because FreeAgent, the newsreader, wasn’t listed.* Then I realized that no newsreader was listed. Thanks, John. I will be checking out some of the stuff on that list.

    • I paid. I use Agent. Agent. VuePrint. BestCrypt. The best pay software ever. But I digress.

I didnt see Commander Keen anywhere on that list. It should deffenatlly be in the top 10 of freeware programs ever

Well he does list Thunderbird which does newsgroups as well as mail. I use it for mail but I don’t like it for newsgroups.

A neat freeware newsreader that I recently started using is XanaNews. It’s still a work in progress and there are better newsreaders, but it does have some features I like. One neat feature is how it color codes threads that have replies to you and threads that you have participated in. It’s best for text groups. Not so good for binary groups. And it gets bogged down if you store too many messages in a group.

Ha! In that case it’s not for me! (I store every message in rsu except for spam.)

But I’ll have a look through that list… once… I… have… time…

Yeah, I was bummed bummed when I discovered that problem. It doesn’t use a real database to store the messages. It starts to bog down when you get about 20,000 to 30,000 messages in a single newsgroup. It needs a more robust message database system. What I like is the general way that it works and the way it color codes threads.

I think freeware telnet and FTP servers are difficult to find. These two work pretty well.

JC, how do you feel about listing freeware CD and DVD rippers on this thread? How about the freeware video compression software and photo-editting software?

Enough with the Windoze wares…

…your search ends here.

Everything’s freeware when you’re running a GPL’ed OS

That was an awesome list. Thanks! Eventually I’ll get a chance to try some of the stuff I downloaded…

It might seem that way, but it’s not. There is commercial software for Linux.

That’s like giving someone free peanuts, but then charging him when he wants a drink to wash them down.

Oh, wait… that’s a pub. Never mind.

That’s fair game. I had no plans for the thread other than sharing that list of best-ever freeware utilities.

I’d like to avoid listing any software that comes with spyware bundled in. That would be things like Kazaa, apps that come with Gator/Claria, and stuff like that.

It would also be nice to note if the software is free for home use only or other restrictions on the license. The list of best-ever freeware utilities that I posted is a little sloppy on that point because he lists a few programs that are free for home use only without making that distinction (for example AVG is free for home use only).

The servers I listed are personal use only, not for resale.

The best freeware photo software was recommended to me by JC and it’s Irfanview.

The freeware DVD ripper is DVDDecrypter

and the freeware shrinker

the two should be used in conjunction. Joining the DVDDecrypter forum gets you the recipe on how to use them.

the freeware mpeg encoder TMPEGEnc is at
