Thanks Gilby (image size restriction)

Thanks for the 800x800 pixels image size restriction Gilby, a very good idea.

Re: Thanks Gilby (image size restriction)

You only knew that because you tried to attach a big picture didn’t you

It was 846 wide.

Andrew

whew, thank gawd for that change…i wonder what aspenmike is going to do next time he wants to post a picture

800X800 is still a prettty big image. I usually crop mine down to 600 pixels wide anyway.

Mojoe

Thank you Gilby. Keeping making this forum a better place to browse! Huge images were very annoying.

Yes,very annoying.

espicially when you(me)cant get them any smaller.

Like everyone else, stop apologizing after the fact, and figure out how to size them before posting!

No dis toward Mike, we love your pictures!

Here’s a short tutorial on using IrfanView to resize an image to make it smaller: Tutorial: Resizing a Photo

The tutorial doesn’t go in to much detail on picking a good final file size. You can get smaller file sizes by reducing the JPEG quality. JPEG quality ranges from 0 to 100. 100 is very high quality and larger files size. 0 is very low quality but very small file size. Generally you’ll want something in between. For images posted in a forum message here, I’ll usually use a quality setting of about 20 to 40. I try to get the final file size down to under 40KB so it is easier to download for the people with 56K modems.

IrfanView is free and you can get it from here: http://www.irfanview.com/

Haha I get mad at those pictures because they’re so awesome  I dont live near anything that great to have pictures taken of me in front of it. Now that I am thinking of it I will try to find something not aspens of couse but something.

You dont have to be that easy on them 40kb takes like 2 seconds for them.

Oh and when I take a picture I know is only going to be used here or other forums I lower the quallity on my camera so I dont even have to bother croping/resizing on the computer

56kbit modem = 4kbyte download speed = about 10 seconds for a 40K picture. On a good day. A page full of larger pictures and the time really starts to add up…

Phil

It takes more than 2 seconds to download a file that size with a modem. There are a good number of people still using modems, and they will be for a while. Not everyone has broadband. Even with broadband, large inline images make for slower page load times and uses more of Gilby’s bandwidth than necessary. 40KB for an inline image file was my upper bound level of comfort back when I was using a modem.

A forum post is not the place for large images (large in terms of file size and large in terms of resolution). Large images belong in the gallery.

Except, of course, bathing suit photos. That’s where you want the highest resolution possible.

yes, to every rule there is an exception.

Yeah I know alot of people use the dial up. I used to have it, its been a while since (2 years) now that I think of it I remember only getting 4-5kbps so yeah I was off by far 10 seconds as phil said. I was wrong :frowning: I’m sorry
