Hello all, I am am from Texas, specifically San Antonio, and would like to make arrangements to have a Texas Muni Weekend sometime in January, or anytime really. Although it is still cold in January, it is relativley warm during the winter, soo people could get down here where its not as cold. Obviously nothings in concrete, and it is in the complete developemental stages. Ideas from anyone are completely welcome and would be appreciated. Anybody from Texas, if you think there is a good place that we could ride, then say so.
e-mail me if you have any questions

There’s a subset of the Texas Juggling Society here in Austin of about half
a dozen unicyclists who occasionally go on fairly challenging Sunday morning
Coker rides in the hills.
By January I might be one of them.
Re: Texas Muni Weekend
Scott,
Of course I would be there, and I think Snable park and Leon Creek would be a good place to have it. I am sure there are other places, that is just the one I know best and it has something for everyone in terms of terrain.
It takes a lot of organization to put on something like the Ca. Muni weekend, so we better start with a Texas informal Muni gathering.
We should be able to get Jerry Gruss and John Payne to attend, if we can afford thier appearance fees. That would ensure that Greg Harper would come, and, well, we’re in the big time!

I’d love to come down. not sure when im off school though.
What next?
Alright for those of you that have done this before, what comes next? A definite time and place? A preliminary meeting with people interested in going? Ive never done this before, and i wouldnt mind organizing it, i just need to know from the experienced what my next step should be.
thanks
scott
I’d be up for a Muni weekend anytime. I live in Austin and
could make it down to San Antonio on short notice for an
informal ride. Just post the time and date and I’m there.
How are the trails in SA for Muni? What options are there?
I’ve been wanting to explore different trails outside of
Austin but the trail reviews I’ve read are always geared
towards MTB.
Re: Texas Muni Weekend
For best results, set the dates as early as possible so people can arrange to be there.
Generally, you want to start with one or more good riding places, and build your weekend from there. If you’re not ready for this, the thing to do is invite nearby riders to try out your local trails for one-day gatherings. We try to do monthly group MUni rides out here, though we haven’t been keeping with our schedule this year.
Doing a few of these will give you the feedback to potentially assemble a weekend of fun riding for people from farther away.
At this past CA MUni Weekend in Santa Cruz, we were talking about whether we should have “the next one” up in Vancouver or elsewhere. And I don’t know if it was a consensus, but I came to the conclusion that it’s better for our sport to have many smaller MUni Weekends than one big fat annual one. In other words, I encourage you to do one every year, if you like, or just when you think up a good one.
If we tried to keep making the “original” MUni Weekend bigger, it would get unwieldly, harder to organize, more crowded, harder to set up, and probably more expensive. How do you take 100 people down a narrow, technical singletrack? It would be too crowded for everyone to watch the expert riders.
By encouraging lots of smaller MUni Weekends, there may be less people who go to each, but it will provide lots more chances for people to at least go to some. So I am encouraging Dylan Wallinger to put one together on Vancouver Island, and will do the same with others everywhere.
Depending on the size of what you plan, make sure there are alternate rides for more entry level people. Generally, they don’t mind walking over technical sections, and the main division must be made based on fitness level. As relatively-easy as the Flume Trail ride is at Lake Tahoe, it’s still a 14 mile trip. So it’s nice if you have an alternative ride for the people who don’t want to do that.
I also try to choose rides that either offer challenging terrain, great scenery, or both. Think also in terms of parking for multiple cars, gathering points, and travel time.
We have always tried to have some competitive events, but there has always been the understanding that we don’t want the weekend to be dominated by them, and that we can’t always do the same stuff in different places. For example, there is only one Frederick Street Park, the location for our Trials competitions in Santa Cruz. I’ve never seen anything that comes close in terms of setting up dozens of trials courses without having to build anything.
So think in terms of what your riders will like, and an experience they will want to repeat someday. Have fun!
Stay on top,
John Foss
You know there’s the California Muni Weekend, there’s this thing in texas, and i think I’ve heard of weekend events going on in half a dozen different states (north shore, etc…). This got the ol’ wheels turning.
There’s 50 states in the union…darn near 50 weeks in a year. There should be a MUni weekend every single weekend of the year, state after state after state. Each state would have to find an organizer and the USA web site could divvy out the weeks. I would be glad to organize the Virginia MUni Weekend.
We could make Britain an honorary state - that would bring us to 51. Then, on the 52nd week of each year, the state representatives could get together in Washington DC for the Unicycle Congress. This congress would probably be something along the lines of getting drunk and unicycling through the streets of Georgetown. So…a little different from the actual United States Congress.
This idea, of course, is completely ridiculous. Go back to your lives.
Thanks
Thanks for all the tips, but when would be the best time for everone to ride. I would like to now set a date as soon as possible. Anybody have any ideas?

Im still looking for good places to ride, so ideas are welcome. I was planning on doing it at O.P. Schnabel Park one day, or part of the day, and then go to a different park- thats what we need to figure out.

Good news: I’ll be back from Chicago.
Bad news: It’s cold in January.

Re: Re: Texas Muni Weekend
O.P.Schnabel Park is on the far northwest side of San Antonio. It is a city park with restrooms, pavillions, bike and hike trails, etc. No camping. There are lots of paved and stabilized base trails in the park itself, and smooth dirt singletrack everywhere. Behind the park is Leon Creek, and that is where the muni and trials riding is. You can ride cross country style for several miles each way along the creek (usually dry). There are a few pictures on my lame muni page: http://www.wallisdesign.com/MuniPage.html
The guy in the pictures has no idea what he is doing.
By the way, those of us who only read posts in the forum don’t see your email address like you would on Usenet, and until now I never really thought to look there for it.

Re: Re: Texas Muni Weekend
Scott K., how long have you lived in Texas? It is not always cold in January. Last year I didn’t miss any winter riding days due to cold. That is why we live here, … I think. Sure is hot as hell in the summer, though.
Anyway, the odds are good it will be decent riding weather.

Since 3/16/0, a little over 2.5 years. Granted San Antonio isn’t Austin,
but Austin is cold in January, and sheesh, you’re less than an hour south.
Speaking of when I moved here, I can’t express to you how dumb it was of me
to close on my house during SXSW. I couldn’t get anyone from any moving
company to help me unload the ton of furniture and ton of free weights and
two tons of books and… all the husky college boy moving company employees
were partying.

Opinions vary. But I’ll probably do it regardless of weather. Unless it’s
ice rain again, I hate that. My backyard fence is on I-35, and when the
roads ice over I hear crashes more than once an hour.
Head 'em up, move 'em out
I’ve got a great promotional idea. At “stock show and rodeo” time in San Antonio people from the outlying cities have “trailrides” to San Antonio on their horses. They ride down the side of the highways with their motorhomes and such following behind. Yes, it is pretty silly but it attracts a lot of attention to the event. Soooo, I think all of the Austin riders should ride to the event in San Antonio on their unicycles down Interstate 35! Think of the media coverage! Most of you guys ride Cokers anyway, so the 90+ miles shouldn’t be a problem. (You don’t have to do it all in one day) We will have the hot chocolate ready for you when you get here.
Okay, I’ve done my part, the rest is up to you.

So far my longest ride has been a quarter mile.
On the other hand…
When is the rodeo?
Re: Re: Texas Muni Weekend
So it will take 400 quarter mile rides to get here. That is still better than riding a horse.
